Tuesday, December 18, 2012 10:40:46 PM The Altoids one works. I used to have a lot of sinus problems and would chew up a couple of altoids, then suck on a third. It clears up the sinuses very well. And the 409, I use Windex to kill ants. Some ants seem immune but most die instantly. Whenever we get a line invading our home, I spray it, then wipe away. If they return, I just spray a spot in the middle of their "line" or at the point of entry and they won't come back for a long time - they'll avoid it like the plague. |

Tuesday, December 18, 2012 10:35:22 AM Washing up liquid does not kill fleas. DO NOT PUT toothpaste on a burn- any cooling action is because of the menthol and will make it worse- cold water only... |

Tuesday, December 18, 2012 4:38:33 AM @Gothmo "I feel like listerine on any kind of remotely open wound will hurt like bloody heck, no thanks" Yeah, I imagine it's going to sting like TCP does (not sure if you have that there), but it's a strong antiseptic that hurts like hell if you gargle with it to get rid of ulcers. |

Tuesday, December 18, 2012 12:27:19 AM drat. Don't put toothpaste on your burns. Or mustard, or honey, or butter, or pretty much anything but running, cool water. (*Heat burns, of course, not chemical)

Monday, December 17, 2012 8:56:13 PM I've tried a few of these before. The Dawn is true. The vinegar and honey works slightly better than throat drops, but not significantly. Honey on pimples does not work. Glue on a splinter works perfectly. Vinegar on bruises does nothing but make your skin smell. |

Monday, December 17, 2012 6:30:06 PM drinking 2 glasses of liquid against headache? of course! a lot of headaches are caused by not drinking enough water, so the blood gets thicker.. it does not have to be gatorade, just water will do. I agree that the specific naming of brand names makes this ridiculous. |

Monday, December 17, 2012 5:47:01 PM Decided to google the alka-seltzer and UTI thing since it made me curious. Alka-seltzer contains aspirin so of course it'll treat pain (but unlikely that'll help for that kind of pain.) But this is interesting: "the sodium bicarbonate present in Alka- Seltzer also helps reduce the acidity of urine, which in turn decreases pain." That's interesting, because that's the exact opposite of what I do to both prevent and treat UTIs. I take 1000MG of Vitamin C, which in turn makes me literally piss acid, which kills the bacteria that causes UTIs. This has seriously cured me in many circumstances, and I'm not the only one who does it. Having a basic, non-acidic piss would have the opposite effect and will likely make the UTI worse as a result. |

Monday, December 17, 2012 5:41:50 PM The cat ear one is a horrible idea for obvious reasons. Don't pour any kind of liquid into the ears of anything unless it's specifically made for it like medicine. Seriously, one trip to the vet is all it takes to get rid of ear mites, stop being so damn cheap. There was a time when Listerine was marketed as a cure-all for everything. Then the FDA came to be and put a stop to that crap for a reason. Yes, Listerine is an anti-septic. So is vodka and rubbing alcohol. That doesn't mean it'll cure anything. Also, pouring it on any kind of a wound is going to hurt like the fires of hell. |

Monday, December 17, 2012 4:41:55 PM A lot of harmful misconceptions here. For instance: using vinegar and honey for a bacterial infection will NOT kill the bacteria outright. Making the pH of your throat more acidic will make it more difficult for many kinds of bacteria to reproduce, but most won't die in any levels of acidity that isn't damaging to your own internal tissues as well. Honey has antibacterial qualities, but again, it's really not enough to kill most bacteria, just enough to make it a less habitable environment, which your immune system might be able to cope with afterward. Most home remedies are like that. Not actually cures, just little things that can help. |

Monday, December 17, 2012 4:25:24 PM Had me wincing there for a moment regarding the Alka-Seltzer cure- I was envisioning the 'plop, plop, fizz, fizz' running through a catheter- thank goodness one merely drinks it. |
