For what it's worth, when I did the quiz myself I missed Ibn Al-Hazen, Florence Nightingale and Mary Anning out of sheer ignorance. I missed turing because I had no idea he died (allegedly) from a poisoned apple. |

I know some people on here have questioned the lack of non-white scientists (apart from Ibn Al-Hazen). There is no real excuse apart from my own ignorance of non-western scientists, and the fact that most people are only aware of mainly western scientists so I wanted to make sure lots of people could get some of the answers correct. I did try to include some female scientists as I felt that was also important. Also there has been a massive historical cultural advantage to being white and male and living in a rich country over the centuries because of social attitudes and structure. This skews the historical record of scientists in a rich-white-male direction. Comment #20 on this page covers the same ground. http://www.chayground.com/archives/1656

Hi everyone.
thanks for trying my quiz, and thanks to the person who put it up here in the first place :)
Regarding representing Turing with an apple, it was just a case of me being too lazy to model an Enigma machine (plus I thought that would make it too easy!). jendrian is correct that I tried to create a clue for each that related to their work (I failed with Turing - I did see three real enigma machines in the science museum in london the other day but I was still too lazy to model one!) and I also failed with badass astronomer Tycho brahe, but I felt that the antlers and metal nose were too good to pass up, and would be enough of a clue :) In the answers page on my site I've linked each answer to the wiki page for that scientist as I hoped that people would want to find out a bit more about each person. |

10. Alan Turing (the poisoned apple that supposedly killed him... don't ask me why the author decided that was the best way to represent Turing)
11. Dmitri Mendeleev (periodic table in his pocket reading Dm - Darmstadium)
12. Hypathia (the scroll, as scrolls were the prefer method of storing information int he library of Alexandria)
13. Erwin Schroedinger (the cat, unfortunately his most famous experiment, though not his greatest contribution)
14. Nikola Tesla (AC/DC pin with the DC crossed off)
15. Mary Anning (Her handbag with a pick-axe and other palaeontology tools. People who thought it was Alice Wilson get extra props for knowing their women in science.)
16. Louis Pasteur (the pasteurized milk. And yes, you can assume it's pasteurized since it's sitting next to the man) |
