@tedgp I did a quick recalculation on this one:
5000 US gallons = 4163.369 UK gallons = 41,633.69lbs = 18.88472 tonnes (metric tons) = 18.58647 long tons (standard UK ton of 2240lbs) = 20.81685 short tons (standard US ton of 2000lbs).
We were both wrong, but in the same ball-park. |

I'd worry more about the splashing and water going over the edges from even moderate activity...
It's a bad idea unless your whole basement is set up to handel it.
As for the ass-pump: what a man does in his basement is is own darn business! |

5000 gallons = 50,000lbs = 22 1/2 tons. I hope his foundations are up to the job. Also, why has he got a tiny ass-pump in it? Too much information there! |

He could get a submersible stock tank heater at the local farm supply store or order one on Amazon.com.
Humidity isn't a problem if you cover it when not in use. I had a hot tub in my basement, and it was fine. You can make a cover out of Styrofoam planks taped together so they fold up in a zig-zag pattern. |

uh.. basement drain? unless the thing explodes, i don't see how a hole is a problem. it's not like he's got *paneling* or anything, just a pooty fridge and an indoor/outdoor carpet. |

I did this. About 7 years ago. College years.
SAME PROBLEM!! Little pump, freezing pool. (same pool actually)
Anyway---- I wonder if this kid thought about when it comes time to take it down.
I didn't think that through... |

Never mind a hole...the issue is the humidity. Without a special set up, an indoor pool results in disaster. A moldy awful disaster. |
