I was going through Basic Training and AIT in El Paso, Texas during the earlier part of 1986. On one of my two week field exercise stints (long story, I ended up having to do more than one) in the desert of White Sands, New Mexico, we were marching along a ridge-line overlooking a very deep and miles wide valley, when a huge explosion and subsequent mushroom cloud rocked our A.O. from the valley floor. Counting off flash-to-bang, we knew it was a few miles from our vantage point, but we'd had a front row seat, as it were, to the entire thing.
I have often wondered over the intervening years what that could have been. As I watched the video, I realized that there was at least one atomic test in April of 1986 in that area. Now, correlation does not equal causality, but it is a strange coincidence. We could simply have been privy to the detonation of old ordnance or something, but it was a pretty massive send-off.

Came looking to convert 'non believers', left reading repost complaints 
But really, thorium is a pipe dream at this time. Will we ever use thorium commercially? I kind of doubt it. What's not a pipe dream is gen3/3+ reactors and the breeder reactors that come with it. |

iirc: @Fancy did try "Classic" a couple of times, and when he puts up the "IAB MOds" thread, the result is the same: half the IABers still complain!
Perhaps they need a few trys to get used to it?
Or a smack upside the head...

@Tacos: Oh that's 100% true! Can't beat solar panels for power in space! Fusion might, eventually.
@Squirlz: I agree, but since @Fancy is too BUTT-LAZY (it's a Canadian term! Usually applied to Americans) to have a "classics" catagory, we are reduced to mockery. |

Its true, solar is great idea - in space.
On our rooftops? Nah, energy isn't dense enough to be worth the overhead of maintaining and disposing of said panels. It will be quite handy when we can paint it on without worry about kids eating the paint chips. |

Solar is still and always will be the greenest form. Keep in mind it still has a long way to go in terms of maturing as a technology. Also, fusion isn't a terrible idea, deserves a thorough looking at. Thorium reactors are also a good idea. Thorium > whatever poo is > Uranium reactors. We could be doing a MUCH, MUCH, MUCHHH better job with out energy, if the oil companies didn't have us by the dicks. |

Can you imagine how many mouths have been fed, tons of food made safe, mri's taken, chemotherapy treatments, schools, homes, hospitals powered, space explored, and gallons of water desalinated, because at one point we developed these bombs?
If you're really concerned about the environment, lets talk about how many pounds of c02 a nuclear reactor outputs, and then compare it to how many watts produced per square foot of facility to any other 'green renewable'.
If you're concerned about human health and safety, lets talk about gen 3/4 reactors, the modern nuclear fuel cycle, and how many Deaths per terrwatt hour all types of energy produces.
