Maybe it happened on those days when it was hot and he had the side window open.

The side window could have been up, and he'd still probably have got enough UVA exposure through it to cause deep wrinkles like those above. The windshield of cars, being laminated, blocks all UV, whereas the side windows generally only block UVB (which causes sun burn and melanomas), but allow a fair percentage of UVA (which causes wrinkles) through.

>Car windows, while blocking UVB, offer you little protection against UVA.<

I'll offer you a quote from Richard Feynman, the Nobel Prize winning physicist, who used a truck windshield to protect himself from the harmful effects of UV radiation coming from the first atomic bomb test:

"I got behind a truck windshield, because the ultraviolet can't go through glass, so that would be safe, and so I could see the damn thing."

Also, see this link. Quote:

"In the majority of modern cars, the windshield is built of laminated glass that blocks all of UVB and the vast majority of UVA."

When you say glass lets a high percentage of UVA through, you mean ordinary glass, not the laminated glass used in car windshields. Only light coming in the side window you're actually sitting at will be harmful.

Goes to show how beneficial it is to keep the left in the dark. The light of day is damaging .

That is why my cars have either 1 or 2% tints on all windows.

@Selous

Transition lenses do block UVA and UVB. But I made no mention of those. Car windows, while blocking UVB, offer you little protection against UVA. I could cite a thousand sources, but maybe you should due even a tiny bit of research before accusing me of being wrong.

I hadn't read the whole description when I looked at the pic and I said oh I bet he's a truck driver.

He could have quit the west coast to east coast (and back) route and switched to north/south work to even things up.

@talon: Driving in different directions wouldn't be necessary for only getting sun exposure on one side of your face. In my tiny little Kia, sun rarely hits my right side, regardless of where I'm facing, because the car roof and passenger door cause shadows, while I'm directly next to the driver window. In the wide cab of an 18-wheeler, I have no trouble imagining somebody in the driver seat getting much more sun on their left side.

Take it from a Californian--just put on the f*cking sunblock! I tan easily (never burn), but I have been using sunblock since my teens. My sun-loving girlfrineds who are of an age with me are really, really regretting all of that sun now.

When he turned 40, he should have moved to England.

You would think after 28 years he would have tanned.

@8bithero--because most people have the luxury of quitting "uncomfortable" jobs.

"Oh man, this long haul truck driving sure is UNCOMFORTABLE! I'll go ahead and quit and draw another card from the career pile. Your turn to spin the spinner, Ma."

My commute is a bit long. My left arm is WAY tanner than my right. And I live in Seattle! Why would it be so hard to believe 28 years in a sunny climate could do this? And no...clear glass does not block uv.

MacGuffin -
It's a shame, because otherwise he would have been such a hottie.

Do you really tink this guy drove for 28 yrs south in the morning and north in the afternoon. Give us a friggin' break.

Why would he need to have done to get a face like that? Glass blocks UV rays, and so does the inside of a cab.

Yup! 45 yrs of direct exposure as a farmer does not do that. Must be another american thing, only happens in certain states. 80+ yr old people in india do not have that problem. So we have some old guy with nothing better to do but try and get attention on the internet, And IAB is starting to suck the hind tit in desperation for something to post. Do you really tink this guy drove for 28 yrs south in the morning and north in the afternoon. Give us a friggin' break.
