"They do not fit in standard size outlet wall boxes. You need an oversize box."

Really late to the party here, but no. Just no. They require a minimum of 16 cubic inch single gang work box. Even houses built in the 60's had 16-18 c.i. boxes (at least in my neck of the woods). Standard modern work boxes are 18 cubic inches. Deep boxes are around 21 cubic inches.

The two power outlets don't look too happy about it.

keith2, I now they don't like to the original article but it's actually switched. It's a physical switch so the USB uses zero power when unplugged. IIRC it may have an electrical switch built in as well, so if you have the cord plugged in but nothing on the other side it goes into a really low standby.

How long before all media outlets have a universal function with an apple interface?

Guess you could stick a lil power supply behind the wall. But then you could never disconnect it without removing the faceplate. Stupid standby power eating away at your wallet.

@batmanners

with the advent of USB3 I can certainly see the advantages over a conventional household socket. This also moves towards changing what's essentially an analog object ruling a digital world.

You know, a lot of people are going to the square style of outlets and switches, that could offer the space for one usb port in the middle, without the oversized box.

"I have a hard time imagining being able to pull enough current through a USB port to run, say, a microwave oven, a vacuum cleaner, the power supply in my desktop computer, or a power-saw."

The point isn't to power appliances with it. It's to recharge your phone without having to unplug whatever may be there. My thought it "Ooh, I can play and charge my PS3 controller from more than 2 feet away from the TV."

except for the price, you might as well just get a transformer that does the same thing. and the beauty, you can unplug the transformer and not have phantom energy

They do not fit in standard size outlet wall boxes. You need an oversize box. So you cannot just swap them out with your old outlets without breaking electrical code. If you do and your house burns down your insurance will not cover you.

Also, I don't think that the USB will replace the current designs for electrical outlets entirely as some are suggesting. I have a hard time imagining being able to pull enough current through a USB port to run, say, a microwave oven, a vacuum cleaner, the power supply in my desktop computer, or a power-saw. But then again, I don't know jack about electrical engineering.

@madest- I agree. Especially since pretty much every phone that uses a USB charger comes with an outlet adapter. My iPod didn't, but I'd bet this isn't compatible with my iPod :/

Clearly the normal socket is scare-- Get outta my head TKD!

If you plug a video game steering wheel into it, you can actually steer the house. True story.

SPOILER: Not a true story.

Looks like the regular outlet is scared, it knows it's useful time is coming to an end.

I sell mini and now micro-usbs that are suppose to become the standard, because of its better eletrical properties in a smaller package. I am told the micro-usb will be the new standard in the near future...

If these are specifically for charging then the outlet will come with a built in transformer which will probably keep them from being a standard for outlets. I can see a few of these in an office build-out, perhaps one or two in a home but now you can buy a usb cord that plugs into a wall outlet saving you from looking for one of these.

The outlet is upside down. New code says the ground needs to be on top so if something were to fall and slip in between the plug and outlet it can't complete the circuit and start a fire.
