The hawk is used to find thermals. Thermals are warm rising air that will allow the glider to rise and thereby glide for longer periods of time. |

Holding your hand out like that is the trainer's way of calling the bird back. But it can't land on her arm when they are moving like that so what they're really doing is just drating with the bird's head.
Unless that was a wild hawk, then that's just pretty cool. |
