davy, from what I understand, the rabbits are leftovers from the pagan Spring festival in which some cultures/tribes/whatever worshipped Eoster (yes, Eoster) who was a rabbit-woman, and symbol for fertility. Other cultures had goats or other horned mammals as fertility idols.
When the Church took over Europe, they needed to get the uneducated townsfolk onside, so they maintained a lot of religious traditions. |
