As somebody who does this for a living, my critique:
Overall aesthetic is terrible - the guy clearly has some chops in maya and after effects or similar, and big kudos to him for finishing a short film singlehandedly (it's not easy for sure), but he needs to go to film school and learn some restraint. Not every single shot needs to have variable speed slo-mo/fast-mo, spinning, wheeling, zooming, camera shots, etc.. Lighting and comping of explosion/fire things and live action people were pretty bad (but the latter is not easy). Super nonsensical camera - even breaking the 180 rule for no real reason.
Overall, it's like a pretty amateur effort for a pro, and pretty amazing for, say, a kid doing it on his own in college or something. There's a ton of work in there, and finding the will to work on and finish it is something not many (esp. the kinds who go on i-am-bored) have. He just needs some real training. Better yet, a director. |

Eh I'm with Eskimo9.
Yes, it was cheezy, and yes it was kind of like Sky Captain, but the point is, this guy did it without the 150 million budget of Sky Captain, and I can't even imagine what he could pull off with a huge budget and real actors.
That was simply unreal. I have a feeling he created it as a "resume" IE check out what I can do with no budget, now give me a budget and some real actors and watch me become famous.

If basically one guy can do that, considering he was not working with pro actors, then he could do awesome stuff with a good team and budget. Yes, physics were dodgy, yes, acting was meh, but still pretty awesome. |

It looks more fake than Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (unless it's going to be a video game and it was all rendered in real time, in which case it looks as fake as a video game).
BTW, how does the mace thing have enough mass to run a truck off the road, but not pull the guy wielding it off of a moving truck?
Is it better than I can do? Yes, of course. Does that make it good? No it doesn't. |

The people are obviously separate, which detracts from the quality...and the car rolling animation was drating hilarious, it was so bad. Still, CAD class makes me appreciate the rest of the video. |
