Thursday, March 04, 2010 10:07:59 AM flingspoo "Aren't those things supposed to be insulated?"No. That would make them much more expensive and much heavier requiring closer tower spacing. They are insulated from the towers and poles where they connect, but other than that, the only insulation is air. |

Thursday, March 04, 2010 6:21:22 AM When all three power lines are connected (via the tree branch) this is one of the worst failures you can have. The same electrical effect can be created using a Jacob's Ladder:Jacob's Ladder effect |

Wednesday, March 03, 2010 11:53:12 PM The branch is green wood, with a lot of moisture in it. As the electricity passes through the branch, the moisture heats up to the boiling point, and the branch whistles like a teakettle as steam escapes. As soon as the branch dries out enough, it catches fire, and this causes it to carbonize, enough to conduct an arc, which is a short-circuit made of plasma. The arc rises due to the heating of the air, and then a fuse or circuit breaker disconnects the power from the line. |
