Wednesday, October 14, 2009 5:58:51 PM anyone else blown away by the fact that at no point in the process, not in the design room, not in the board room or approval meeting, not when it was pitched to whoever, or when the factory manager decided to manufacture, NO ONE ANYWHERE just said "Erm... hold on..." |

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 12:34:48 PM really, for the people that don't realize how racist it really is are not aware of this specific historical racism: black people = "monkies", "spooks", ect. they could have chosen any other cutesy animal, a pony, a dolphin, a kitten, anything. but they chose a monkey? I'm jealous of the people who don't find this offensive, obviously ignorance is bliss. |

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 11:19:46 AM I find it funny that anyone would take racial offense to this. It's a freakin' monkey. Boohoo, "The baby's black! It's obviously racist!" no, it's not. If you really take offense to it, nobody is making you buy it. |

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 7:01:25 AM flagler: "This has to be fake."It's not, I work at Costco. I was in the breakroom bored off my ass one day , and decided to read all the papers posted up on the wall. One was about our store manager being fired so of course that caught my interest first, and right next to that letter was the letter about this "Offensive Product" which turned out to be this doll. I can't remember exactly what it said other than the fact that the doll was being pulled , and that Costco was apologizing for it or something. |

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 3:21:41 AM That's not racist at all, it's a doll next to a monkey. Idiots who think anything involving black people is racist are some of the worst offenders.I'm just gonna point to what Geoman said... |

Tuesday, October 13, 2009 5:52:39 PM There were a lot of words back in the day referring to blacks in a dehumanizing way. We have all noted change in the last half a century and have chastised one word in particular as now the “N” word. We can not demonize every word. The dialogue in the posts here exemplifies a positive attitude towards racial equality. A good majority of people see the Monkey as what it is a Monkey, not a connotation to a person of color. A "lil monkey" as a small child. Lil monkey is an endearing term I used for my childern as I am sure many have used. Others who are still in the OMG offensive stages, see it as offensive to a person of color. Whichever your attitude the approach is positive. Those who still bare hatred are dieing and dwindling. Once we all, blacks and whites, learn to let go of the past stigmas then and only then will there be racial harmony |

Tuesday, October 13, 2009 1:20:26 PM Some people may refer to their child as "lil' monkey", but historically the term "monkey" has been a word used to degrade and dehumanize African Americans. Whether the maker of the doll intended to do this or not can't really be known, but what is known is that the doll is clearly offensive to a lot of people. I find it confusing that so many people would tell others to get over it and move on when something like this is yet another reminder of the many inequalities that still exist between people of color and Whites in this country. People think that because the president if African American, that racism is a thing of the past. For those of you who think racism is no longer an issue in the U.S., please educate yourselves.
