So, on the basic assumption that I have NEVER made any of those mistakes (at least not once I'd actually left school) does that make me smarter than the average smart person?
I do admit to making some fundamental spelling errors, but they tend to be for polysyllabic words like "unnecessarily" (and "polysyllabic" for that matter!) and let's face it, those are hard words to spell on a chalkboard in front of a room full of students.

...If you didn't know most of that (the first page at least), you need to consider going back to gradeschool

"...even the last item before the "and" gets a comma."

The Chicago Manual of Style calls for a final comma, e.g., "a, b, and c." However, the Associated Press Stylebook does not, e.g., "a, b and c."

I prefer to use the final comma because 1) I don't write for a newspaper, and 2) it makes the sentence more clear, especially when there are compound elements in the list, e.g., "profit and loss," or "shipping and receiving." The AP form, though, is technically correct.

I just thought of one that a lot of smart people actually DO get incorrect, that is affect and effect simply because they have such similar meanings, pronunciations, and spellings.

another grammatical error is the lack of commas in lists. in a list, even the last item before the "and" gets a comma.

"Journalism major here. Never made those mistakes, because I'd be in big time trouble if I did!

Also did anyone else find it funny that they spelled baloney wrong? It's bologna."

well Mr "Journalism Major" maybe you should realise the difference between slang terms and food. (if you do not agree check the wiki page redirect from balogna)

btw I read the comments also.

KannaLilly:"Yeah... Have to agree wtih the masses. Really stupid mistakes. When I was first really getting in to writing, as a preeteen, my mum pointed them out for me, and within a week they were gone. I've never met a teenager or adult who makes those mistakes. "

Then you havn't seen many teens or adults writing things by hand. Start reading them, and make sure you look for the errors. You may find yourself a little surprised when you start meeting new people.

I think the only one on here I've really done is ahold ...it just seems like it would be a good word! But no, I have definitely remedied that.

I am guilty of none of these. In fact, these are all things that drive me completely bonkers when I see other people do them. The only one I was guilty of at all, past the age of about 8, was using "alot" instead of "a lot." But I saw the error in my ways.

Yeah, I thought I was going to be guilty of at least one of these. I'm not. This is 3rd grade crap.

This article reeks of someone being arrogant about their awesome spelling skills.
"Its nothing to loose sleep over" "not to bad" "are alot of people" "irregardless of what you may think" "get ahold of you’reself," O AH SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE >:|

Just because you're smart doesn't mean that you don't make spelling mistakes every once in a while. Most people do, especially if English in generally is not their strong point. I know several mathematical wiz-kids who are incredibly slow when it comes to grammar, not that they care.

If you make these mistakes, you're not smart. You're a dumbass.

Actually, in all seriousness, making these mistakes precludes one being "smart." To put it another way, only DUMBASSES make these mistakes. "Your" and "you're?" That's elementary-school stuff, right there.

Somehow I doubt that smart people make these mistakes. Generally, a person is smart because they paid attention in school, and if you did that, you'd at least know basic grammar.

Well, I always thought that "ahold" was one word. But I never even use it, so who cares?
