Thursday, September 17, 2009 10:39:20 AM I'll feel bad when those who don't have health care give up their cigarettes & alcohol, quit having kids they can't afford. The following are facts about persons defined as "poor" by the Census Bureau:Forty-six percent of all poor households actually own their own homes. The average home owned by persons classified as poor by the Census Bureau is a three-bedroom house with one-and-a-half baths, a garage, and a porch or patio. Seventy-six percent of poor households have air conditioning. By contrast, 30 years ago, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning. Only 6 percent of poor households are overcrowded. More than two-thirds have more than two rooms per person. The average poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.) |

Thursday, September 17, 2009 10:38:11 AM Nearly three-quarters of poor households own a car; 30 percent own two or more cars. Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions. Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception. Seventy-three percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and a third have an automatic dishwasher. |

Thursday, September 17, 2009 6:32:53 AM Well here's the thing. There are 45 million people in America WITHOUT healthcare. Not 45 million who CAN'T afford it. |

Thursday, September 17, 2009 6:16:53 AM Yeah, well, there are 307 million Americans total. What I was talking about was the 45 million Americans estimated who can't currently afford heathcare in the US. I made no typo.-- Ah, I got you now, Davy. If we reform the healthcare system, though, it will be accessible to everyone, not just those 45 million. |

Thursday, September 17, 2009 5:37:20 AM It's actually more like 450 million people. Kind of complicates matters.

Thursday, September 17, 2009 5:11:57 AM "xxPinkxx not great. ive heard better anti obama stuffs"That's because they are pro-Obama my little pickle, this is called "Sarcasm" or sometimes "Irony" or "Paradox". Bless your little innocent Canadian cotton socks though. Really interesting how many Americans don't get this, I guess it is a reflection of their beautifully direct, simple and honest outlook on the World. :) |

Thursday, September 17, 2009 2:11:25 AM chrees516: There are so many things wrong with what you've said I don't know where to start.First, you don't understand how the US economy is designed to work and how it's been allowed to become flawed, through people thinking they can "change it for the better" Capitalism is supposed to be "economic inequality" This is supposed to make people work hard to acheive what they want instead of having it handed to them. Second, this phrase "slavery that happened literally seconds ago in the grand scheme of time." made me laugh out loud. Look up the word Literally in the dictionary please. I believe you were looking for the word "Figuratively".
And getting stuck in debt. Anyone can find a way out of debt, if they work hard. Unforunately, many people believe they should be helped out of the debt they got themselves into. I do however believe a college education should be standard education. If everyone has to pay to go to college, pric |

Wednesday, September 16, 2009 8:46:12 PM This is going to open a whole new can of worms, but the problem most Americans have with healthcare reform is that its mostly a matter of bad timing. The actual process is going to cost over a trillion dollars. Yes. A trillion. Not an exaggeration. That's a little difficult for a country that is barely recovering from a hard recession.I agree that reform needs to happen, but I think Obama was prematurely pressured into addressing it -- I think he was more focused on bringing the economy back to stability, but try backing down on it when you have families who are going bankrupt because one member has a major health problem. Definitely a very complicated issue. |

Wednesday, September 16, 2009 8:44:33 PM davymid - i am also an outsider, and yet don't have the self-restraint you show regarding commenting on this debate. perhaps because legions of liars in the states have spent the last few months trying to scare americans with the "evil canadian" system. i must say that the vast majority of canadians (though by no means all) are very proud of their health care, and the fact that the american system is so medieval is one of the things that allows us to remain so annoyingly smug. |
