@opiebreath "Police, it is innate to categorize and to form groups, especially based on aesthetics. However it is not innate to form racist ideas."

Yes, it is innate to form groups. Human history is full of it - religious wars, race wars, political wars, etc.. It seems perfectly reasonable to expect that for kids, skin color would be the most obvious categorizational variable, since it's in plain sight. Kids at that age don't have an ideology, so they can't argue about politics. They may have been raised in a religious family but they haven't really thought about it yet, so they can't group around that (unless there are obvious differences in attire, like turbans or crosses or yarmulkes).

They will group by skin color. And, as the study in the article shows, they will tend to think those in their group are nicer and better than the other group. So racism isn't "innate" but it is almost inevitable given the innate tendency to visually group people.

I was rushing in the airport and saw that. I was in such a fit of laughter I missed my flight. Now I hate this cover.

@osirisascend: Got that much. It seemed that you were implying that it was racist because of the context of the thread.
Also, I was never gone... No need to welcome me back.

This would not be the least bit funny if it wasn't for such a good caption/title.

You guys should actually read the article. It's interesting. Nothing groundbreaking or anything. The title was a cheap way to publicize itself though.

Okay, babies can't be racist, but someone's up bringing, even from the time they are a baby, can lead them to be racist when they grow up.
For the longest time, I saw Asians as steriotypes, because my dad told me that Asian kids don't have any free time and all they do is study. I grew up believing that. Eventually, I ended up being friends with a lot of Chinese and Koreans, and found out that my dad was wrong. It wall all in what I was told as a kid. Get it?

Good old Newsweek, nice to see it hasn't changed its reputation for quality, accuracy and insight. I remember reading about the 1957 Tasmanian Bushfires - the entire island was black and ruined, not a living soul to be found, Tasmania would never recover.

This was indeed frightening news to the 417,645 surviving people who weren't among the 62 who died, living in the 6,576,158 hectares which weren't part of the 264,000 hectares which were burned.

I'm almost sure that babies can't be racist seeing as how they're well..babies.

Exactly my reaction. Not to be Pessimist, but I guess nearly anything can be proven, based on the study and stuff.

I can see how a baby would be more drawn to some "thing" that is the same color as what they saw at birth. Babies can't be racist because they have no concept of race. They just go to mommy. If a turtle was the first thing to give it compassion it would be pro-turtle.

"They form groups based on looks. They had half of the kids in a class wear a red shirt, the others a blue shirt. Let them play together in recess and never separated them."

Wait, were these kids all complete strangers to each other or did they just choose a class in a school and plopped them down on the blacktop in different shirts? If they had preexisting relationships that could alter the data significantly.

But in perspective...these are BABIES. Frickin' BABIES people. BAAAAAAAAAABIES! Thumb-sucking, diaper-crapping, drool-gurgling BABIES!

They are all still in development! No motor skills for chrissakes! It's not as if they are going out to change society just yet! Man! Calm down! D:
