The Opt Out Village is a lie! clearly that one man made contact with the outside world! A breach of his contract! and yet, it sounds as though he yet lives in this town!
Besides, if his health problems (breathing) and lack of friends isn't personal information what is!?

@michaelcsr

You misspelled "misspelling". And "actually", for that matter.

I agree that the onion is at best mildly funny sometimes. But, you gotta wonder how many people still take these "reports" for fact and how many of those morans (mispelling intended) acctually did this just to see if the Google truck would show up.

"Google doesn't collect personal data"

Ever notice the ads in Gmail? They reflect exactly what is going on in your inbox.

"Google doesn't collect personal data"

You don't really believe that, do you?

Google collects a huge amount of personal data. They might claim that they don't use it, much, but that's not the same thing.

Google has a unique ID number for you, stored on your PC. All your google searches and a lot of your web browsing (a lot of sites use a google page and not just for searching) are associated with an ID number unique to you that used to expire in 2038 and now expires 2 years after you stop using the net. Gmail is also scanned by software. Etc. Google is the biggest gatherer of personal information on the net, surpassing even surveillance-happy governments.

"if you don't want to give away your most private information, that's fine, you can just toil and die in the hinterlands..." that part made me laugh...

I don't get it. People would move to that village so their personal data would be safe. But...
1) They destroyed their personal data
2) Google doesn't collect personal data
2.1) If it does, you can stop them
