I remember watching a program about that when I was little, about that coelacanth. I was scared for like a week. It's not that I'm scared of fish it's just that... well... ok. Maybe I ma a little scared of fish. At least ocean fish. And some freshwater ones too x_x |

As far as ocean/river/lake species go you really can't rule out anything. Recently(a couple years ago I think) they found a Celocanth in the waters of the Amazon. This species was thought to be extinct for thousands of years as only fossils had been found. Lo and behold some fisherman pulled up a five foot specimen. Despite these sorts of discoveries you really have to take the "giant sea beast" thing w/ a grain of salt. You would be more likely to find gigantism/hypertrophy in squid and octopus species(which I find fascinating). |

To bikenutt and lionheart: I couldn't agree more. Lake monsters are a different issue though. Loch Ness, we know those pics were about an elephant swimming with its strunk out of the water. But about Caddie and Ogopogo, who knows huh. If Bloop can actually be an enormous f*cking creature, then maybe there's a chance we'd find evolved marine reptiles deep down there as well. Imagine dinosaurs with viper fish eyes and teeth. Whether they'd be actually able to have a high survivability outside deep water is debatable. There's always the slight possibility that these things exist. I know for one that it's hard to track down animals in the Hymalayan areas because of heavy snow storms. Various caverns have also not been explored decently. There could well be living links between the DNA of ours and our ancestors (apart from known species). Only time will tell, and hell, we might not even be around to witness. |

Fake footprints. Some guy was doing something like this for awhile, making "big foot feet" out of plaster and walking around with them. He fooled people for many years. I imagine this is something like that. |

Another thing, they had this on tv awhile back. All those foot prints are fakes. They sent them off to an expert, and he said that the impressions indicate animals that wouldn't be able to walk. Nice. |

Lionhart..you are talking about necessary numbers to breed..but Tasmanian Devil lifespan is around 6 years in the wild, give or take a few. Galápagos tortoise on the other hand can live up to 150 years in the wild. I'm not saying any of these things exist. All I'm saying is sometimes there are things beyond the grasp of current research. If there's something that can life 150 years, then maybe there's something that can live longer, therefore even with incredibly low numbers for breeding, the species can still be around for a long time with what little numbers they have. |

For all those "Believers", here's a harsh dose of reality. The Tasmanian Devil population has a facial tumor disease spreading through it. Devil population has dropped by 80% over the last 10 years, and there are fears that IF THE POPULATION DROPS BELOW 10,000, the species will go extinct.That's right - you need at least 10,000 to be considered a viable breeding population for survivability. Any less and you get mutated, deformed cross-bred offspring. So yeti's, sasquatches, bunyips, thylacines and Loch Ness monsters are all non-existent, because even IF they ever existed, they don't have the necessary numbers to breed. |

You seem like an intelligent fellow, and yes I realize we have not explored a good deal of the planet. My argument against the existence of this creature is a simple one. If you look back at historical data pertaining to the extinction of the planet's species you will notice some evolutionary constants. One of these is the fact the first species to die off (whether it be a cataclysmic event or just the incursion of man) are always the larger species first. This is one of the rule's of extinction, thus this greatly reduces the likelihood of said species existing at all. We also have to take into account that NO real physical evidence has ever been found, no photo's, no carcass, nothing. We have found very well preserved mammoth and human's remains in the same region as the so-called yeti though. This creature may have existed hundreds of thousands of years ago, but having a big-ass Yeti running around at present, is near impossible as far as nature is concerned. |
