Sunday, July 12, 2009 9:59:44 PM Spider_sol "Testing and using are different."True, but there were at least two other cases where a nuke was "used," Project Rulison and Project Rio Blanco. They were tests of a sort, but not to test the nukes (although standard test data was acquired). Rather, they were testing to see if nukes could be used to release natural gas from underground rock formations. |

Sunday, July 12, 2009 6:50:46 PM > the_phantom > only two nukes have ever been used, and they were on japanYour ignorance would be amusing if it wasn't so sad. Hundreds at Bikini Atoll and various other test islands; in Central Australia at Maralinga, etc. Since 1945 there have been over 2,000 nukes detonated. The largest SINGLE weapon tested released an energy approximately 4,000 times that of the atomic bomb that leveled Hiroshima, and there is no limit to the explosive power that may be attained. The total strength of the present nuclear weapons may be equivalent to about 1 million Hiroshima bombs (Source). |

Sunday, July 12, 2009 4:56:37 PM I'm sure there are alot more lost than 92. I know during the 50s we used to fly planes around with nukes to show how badass we were. We lost more than half of those. For tons of stupid reasons. |

Sunday, July 12, 2009 3:59:39 PM i am so confused, the title is "92 known cases of nuclear bombs lost at sea" and the only actual example they give is of the Kursk, which was recovered. they just say "92 cases of...." then they went of about animals who where not bombed with nukes. they do talk about some nuclear accidents released by the government (best part about that is the link goes to the DoD website and not the actual reports) but dont go into detail about any of the accidents and if they were bomb related. being government reports they probably talk about light bulbs burning out at nuke plants. this seems more like sensationalism then anything else |

Sunday, July 12, 2009 3:33:38 PM They only lost 92? I was thinking along the lines of 5000 or so. I guess the nuke the russians lost - that weren't at sea - doesn't count. Oh, well. |

Sunday, July 12, 2009 12:55:27 PM this is entirely real. the missiles are NEVER loaded with warheads when doing testing and what not.trust me, designing the guidance systems on these things is a lot more complex than you might imagine. and by the way, phantom. that's only true in wartime. thousands have been detonated in testing. |

Sunday, July 12, 2009 9:30:13 AM "When bombs started falling in Belgrade in 1999, most of the pregnant animals in the zoo aborted their young or delivered prematurely. The bombs hit out power and water supplies, leaving the sea lions and polar bears to suffer from exposure.
