No it isn't - you have a right to hit someone until they are dazed or unconscious. You can do so in defence of self, others, property or to prevent a crime in progress. You can attack them on sight if they are in your home - their presence is a threat. This is all very clear in the law. That's the law, as opposed to urban myth. People have killed intruders and it's been ruled reasonable force.

I bet you're thinking of Tony Martin, who used an illegal gun to shoot people in the back, as he had clearly planned to do (and he still escaped a murder charge). That's not reasonable force.

He's a boxer. It's an effective martial art. Retiring doesn't mean forgetting, so he knows how to punch very efficiently. Presumably he still trains to maintain strength and vigour. Speed too, because those two punches were a combo. He probably dodged the knife, too.

Next time anyone sees someone blathering about self-defence being illegal in the UK, show them this. It's legal to attack a burglar on sight, even if they don't threaten you (their presence is deemed a threat in itself).
