Thursday, June 04, 2009 7:08:23 AM She sounds less crazy than some not-homeless people I've encountered. That 'cave' is disgusting. Blehh. But also very wrong to clean up UNLESS they truly mean it that they're helping them find better homes...but I kinda doubt that'll happen, or at best it'll be temporary help then they'll be even more homeless than before |

Wednesday, June 03, 2009 10:00:53 AM I agree with everybody, but she does sound kinda crazy. Not exactly my first choice for a representative of the homeless. |

Tuesday, June 02, 2009 7:33:02 PM I think the best way to help homeless people isn't just to throw money at them every once in a while to clear one's conscience, but instead to invest in facilities that have running water, food, and, ideally, trained personnel to help people apply for jobs. Our government could help that out more, but that would mean *gasp* TAXES! EEK! |

Tuesday, June 02, 2009 3:59:46 PM Its kinda hard not to be judgmental of homeless people sometimes. On a few occasions, in front of my local 7-11, a homeless man or woman would ask for money and if I give them any they go straight into the nearest liquor store and buy some booze. But, it is true that a lot of homeless people are in that situation because they were born in it, not because they destroyed their own life through drug and alcohol abuse, so I don't discourage charity. |

Tuesday, June 02, 2009 2:05:28 PM people should stop saying it's the homeless people's fault. Sure, in some cases it really is, but there are also people who were born into extreme poverty and can't do anything about it. If you have no money to get a proper education, then you can't get a good paying job and you can't make enough money, so your kids can't get a proper education and they can't get a good job and make enough money, and the cycle keeps going for generations. |

Tuesday, June 02, 2009 1:23:25 PM They should just clean it up and install some toilets and a hose with a drain for excess water to flow into. They'll be using the water same as it is in a park water fountain. Would the govt pay for those pipes and for the water that, instead of giving a thirsty nobody a drink, actually supports a place to live? Hell no they wouldn't. This is so wrong. |

Tuesday, June 02, 2009 11:28:22 AM In my opinion, people should be responsible for their own financial welfare. The only time I support state aid is for people affected by circumstances beyond their control (children, disabilities, and temporary assistance for people who lose their job involuntarily.)That's not to say charity for the poor is bad, but theres a difference between being obligated to surrender a portion of your money to them, and doing so out of your own choice. It's just important to remember that there will always be poverty like this. It's unavoidable. |

Tuesday, June 02, 2009 9:50:04 AM I don't know what's worse: Tearing down their shelter or letting them end up like that in the first place. |

Tuesday, June 02, 2009 4:43:47 AM Homeless people are worthless. Hey kipz0r, then you pay for it. You most likely live at home with your fat mum anyway. |

Tuesday, June 02, 2009 4:18:34 AM Maybe a crazy thought, but why didn't they improve the 'shelter' with things like fresh water, a toilet etc.Because if they did, it would be a 'home' so essentially they would cease to exist. |

Monday, June 01, 2009 10:41:01 PM Anyone who could live like this has to be mentally ill. We thought we were being so enlightened and compassionate when we closed down all the state mental hospitals and gave the patients their freedom. Well, this is how they end up -- living in filth. When people can't even get it together enough to go outside to piss, society needs to step in and start making decisions for them. |

Monday, June 01, 2009 10:37:36 PM This is so dumb. The homeless found a creative way to make the bridge more useful and they seal it up with my my ****ing tax money. That place was perfect and out of the way so no one has to look at them. |

Monday, June 01, 2009 10:13:28 PM i just wonder what would have happened if those hobos had improved on the joint... like if the city people went in there and saw that it was clean, and organized, and they had a homless paramedic acting as a doctor, and a homeless cook with a clean kitchen cooking up meals for everyone etc... if it looked like a college coop dorm for the homeless... instead of the bottom third of a landfill |

Monday, June 01, 2009 9:24:30 PM feverdream: why is human waste disgusting now but back in the early 1900's it was common place for a family of 8-10 to share a one bedroom (if even) apartment with no running water and thus crapping in the corner. as has been said, they were not harming anyone, yes the state owns that land but they weren't really use it, they wanted the space above that land they bought.all your points are valid but only to an extent. the living conditions of these home less is not much different than immigrants experienced not 100 years ago, and americans as a whole experienced not more than 150 years ago. heck, its not much different than some countries in the world live like. its funny, people will always complain about the homeless. first its, "they mooch off the system" now its, "why have a system if they aren't going to live off it" |
