Tuesday, May 12, 2009 6:49:41 PM Conejito1011, its called that because its built as a strip of stores (so i assume). Strip malls arent inside actual mall buildings, they are seperate series of stores chained together. |

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 5:12:57 PM Why is it called a "Strip Mall"? Is it the same as a regular mall? |

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 3:00:36 PM mac n cheese, I'm afraid you're mistaken. Very rarely will you see complete combustion, and even then, under very controlled circumstances. You're going to end up with airborne carbon and hydrogen (Consider the large volume of smoke billowing out of the wreckage), and the reaction uses far less oxygen than complete combustion. There's only one detonation, the initial one- even if some of the gas doesn't combust, it's dispersed too much to combust even if more oxygen is added.Furthermore, there's not going to be two explosions, even with complete combustion. The energy is dissipated extremely rapidly, and the chain reaction cannot continue. The closest you can get to this sort of multiple-explosion event is continual combustion, i.e. burning it continuously as fuel. Oh, and you forgot the obvious- all the water released by the combustion is in gaseous form, and therefore the volume stays far too close to the starting amount to cause an implosion. |

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 9:34:07 AM CH4(g) + 2O2(g) > CO2(g) + 2H2O(l))*to finish off the gas would now expand and the explosion happens |

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 9:31:15 AM ok so it was an implosion followed by an explosion... this is because the gas needs sufficient oxygen to burn in reality there would be more ch4 than O2 so only part ofthe methane would burn (this is almost like two explosions happening) 1st explosion (CH4(g) + 2O2(g) → CO2(g) + 2H2O(l)). 1 L + 2 L > 1 L (negligible) in science a liquid always takes up less area than a gas of same mass so since the water (2H2O) is a liquid it is negligible. then what we effectively have is 3 litres of gas ( 1L of methane + 2L of O2) burning to become one litre of gas ( 1L CO2) and thus a lower pressure inside than outside so the air gets sucked in. and since that air contains oxyjen... 2nd explosion any methane that didnt have enough oxyjen to react first time reacts then and the explosion gets bigger ( all the methane that didnt react first time would react now) the energy given off would be much more than the energy of the first explosion a |

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 1:27:31 AM Hellfire, enough speculation. I'll make the call to Prince George's County in Maryland tomorrow. I think it's definitely a reflection of a man in the glass of the storefronts. Additionally, I don't dispute desslox's knowledge of gas ignitions. However, I DO think more on the side that this was a planned and intentional exercise by local authorities. Whether or not the explosion/implosion happened as per plan remains to be known. But assuming this was just a "taxi" cam that just happened to be recording a vacant shopping plaza in the middle of the afternoon is far more a reach than the reasonable alternatives. Or maybe I should begin believing that 9/11 never happened and yes, in fact there is beachfront property in Arizona. :/ |

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 12:02:07 AM you are both correct... it is a implosion ( the air being sucked into the explosion) which then explodes outward. trying to think of a good example..ill sleep on it and come back tomm. for anyone wondering but you are both correct just need to let the brain rest for a example lol |
