Monday, May 04, 2009 11:24:14 AM I think you're both wrong. Writing an essay about political voting tactics on a video comment board, either way, you still lose. |

Monday, May 04, 2009 8:23:06 AM Definately won't make it to the final, even Estonia's 2008 entry was better than this. |

Monday, May 04, 2009 8:15:29 AM Regarding the immigrants voting for the countries they're from... that's as much "politics" as "voting for a song they enjoy", it would be pretty stupid to say that they had to vote for a country other than their one of origin... if I moved to another country and liked the UK entry (Hey, we might enter a good one at some point, last time we did we won.) I'd vote for it, hence why the immigrants for for their own countries songs. They like them.As for Malta, apologies, I wasn't really looking at checking, but the song was Molitva, and was from Serbia & Montenegro, either way, it deserved to win even though I personally preferred (and bet on) Finland pulling a double header. And promoting it does work. Lordi enter, and win with ease due to being well known and actually promoting their song. The reason the UK and Ireland fail each year is both of our countries are sending in crap... although I did love the Turkey Ireland entered the other year, really wanted |

Monday, May 04, 2009 7:44:13 AM ...because to them a vote for another Scandinavian country (no matter how they feel about their neighbors) is better than giving it to some "dirty foreigners". (But that still happens much to their chagrin because there is a high immigrant population down South that votes for their home countries).Swedes like putting on the facade that they are open and welcoming to all cultures but ask any immigrant living in Sweden for the real truth, we get treated as second class no matter how hard we try. I speak Swedish fluently, have multiple college degrees, I try to be friendly to all, but still get crapped on a daily basis. And I come from a "good" country (USA) that they enjoy culturally. I feel horrible for those who come from places like Turkey and Iraq, if I have it bad I know they get that in spades. ._. But anyhow, that's the harsh truth about Swedish Eurovision voting. |

Monday, May 04, 2009 7:35:55 AM Pabasa: No sweat, and nice clip there.Yeah, it's true about Carola though, her only real competition (had they ever chose to run) would be if ABBA got back together. Carola is a legend to the Swedes but ABBA trumps Carola in the nostalgia department. Heck, ABBA wouldn't even have to sing, just stand on stage and they'd get the green light. Messed up and slightly sad, but true. And you are indeed very right about the difference in music but "neighbor camaraderie" thing. Finland is all about metal, and the Swedes have a very very different musical taste. And at the risk of being lynched here for pointing out something we aren't supposed to talk about (Swedes dislike anyone opening discussing this) but they are pretty damn racist and xenophobic. Trust me, I'm an immigrant living here myself. They'd rather give votes to neighbors because...(will finish in one more post) |

Monday, May 04, 2009 7:12:28 AM Apologies, you are right of course. Carola's been messing with my perception of Swedish music. I was wrong, it's definitely pop.Nevertheless, same principal still applies, neighbouring countries with different musical tastes, yet still strong neighbourly voting. "Carola can walk up and fart into a microphone and be the one chosen every time to represent Sweden" Lovely. Just lovely. |

Monday, May 04, 2009 6:54:04 AM Pabasa: "Sweden, its neighbour is one of those countries that sends ballads year after year. YET they've given themost points to each other throughout the ages. "same musical taste"? O_o? Same culture more likely.I agree with the points thing, In the North up here the usual voting toss goes to Finland, and in the south the toss usually goes to Denmark. Depends on where you are but I've been to a few parties, it is true. Disagree about the ballads though. Sweden is very much a certain type of "pop" music, what they call "schlager" over here. The sad part is, the Swedes have a fixation (due to nostalgia) about the singer Carola. No matter how many good entries they have, Carola can walk up and fart into a microphone and be the one chosen every time to represent Sweden. It really makes me feel bad for the others in the country that have talent, they're never given a chance as long as her hat is in the ring. |

Monday, May 04, 2009 6:27:41 AM Coolio. Davy, you like my essay? I don't get myself sometimes. I hardly get this worked up defending Islam, but damn if someone starts spouting nonsense about Eurovision. And I'm not even European! I need to go see a counsellor or something. P.S. Davy, said you were coming down to KL! |

Monday, May 04, 2009 6:07:09 AM ...forgotten soon after.I thought I could end my post there, but since I needed to continue might as well get everything off my chest. Re: Promotion, I know your comment wasn't made with any sense of seriousness, but I'd just like to state that promotion is 1) not worth it and 2) probably doesn't work as proven by successful artistes who have already made it famous outside their country but yet still fail to make it in Eurovision - See Kate Ryan of Belgium (2006)(I've heard her on US online radios), TaTu from Russia (2003) (granted they were #2). Youtube is probably the best way of 'promoting' as per your suggestions, and I think they're working it. As a side note, I'd like to sympathize with the UK. Not producing quality enough ballads to capture the audience and failing at being cheeky like Ukraine did in 2007. Maybe this year, with national jury voting the politics would be less. But don't count on it. |

Monday, May 04, 2009 5:51:38 AM And based on personal experience, I'd like to point out that politics DOES play a role, albeit admittedly it has never detracted a good winner from winning or put a sucky performance on top. I've lived in Ireland for four years. Plenty of Polish and Latvians and other Eastern Europeaners here. And hey, surprise, for the past 4 years Ireland has been giving the most votes to Poland, Latvia and Lithuania except for the years any of those country don't appear in the finals. Immigration, is, interestingly, one aspect of politics. Not saying that immigration itself is bad, or a significant issue by itself, but hell, really, in Eurovision 2006, it was the biggest WTF ever when Ireland gave the sole douze points to Lithuania who sang the ridiculous "We Are the Winners" when everyone else gave them points to Finland. 'Similar musical tastes' my ass. But yes, I agree with you fully that regardless of these politics, the winners really deserved them and the sucky ones get fo |

Monday, May 04, 2009 5:40:54 AM mcastle, a couple of corrections and facts (+ opinions on facts):Malta never won. They're actually probably the best team that never won. Greece won the year after that. Finland is notorious for being a Rock country, while Sweden, its neighbour is one of those countries that sends ballads year after year. YET they've given themost points to each other throughout the ages. "same musical taste"? O_o? Same culture more likely. |

Monday, May 04, 2009 5:17:05 AM Politics? I wish people would shut up about that bollocks, rarely does a crap song wind up winning. People spouted politics when Lordi won, despite being the best song by a mile, the following year Malta won, with a solid entry. The countries that do crap tend to deserve it.Countries near each other are bound to vote for each other... shockingly enough they like similar music, even more so when it used to be one country and is now split up into a bunch. Politics is only spouted by a country who can't understand that the utter crap they're sending is exactly that, utter crap. Plus doing some actual promotion wouldn't hurt, and I don't mean promoting in your own country, because that's the only damned country that wont be voting for you (UK I'm specifically looking at you... well us... here) |

Monday, May 04, 2009 5:03:27 AM I don't care about eurovision. It doesn't matter how good an entry is, countries will just vote for others because of politics.I hate Europe :l |
