Saturday, May 16, 2009 6:18:46 AM Two women die every week because of domestic violence?! Is that worldwide or just from that country?

Wednesday, May 06, 2009 11:06:14 AM Too violent? They shouldn't have banned it at all :/ People need to be more aware of these things tbh. My ex boyfriend used beat me up, and I thought it was normal and just accepted it until last year. Call me stupid, but if this had been on tv at around that time, i'd have dumped his ass sooner. |

Tuesday, May 05, 2009 8:11:57 PM "too violent" of a domestic abuse advert?? what, do they think that all or most domestic abuse is less violent?? I'm sorry people, (the advert people) but the pretty little hollywood life you live isnt the same as all others, and it really CAN be that bad. a PSA like this would've been a nice wake up call to thousands. |

Monday, May 04, 2009 9:48:33 PM A couple of examples:i) Woman abused by her girlfriend. Kicks and punches. Victim was 6'1", athletic build. Abuser was a head shorter and far less strong. Victim sheltered by friend. Abuse never reported because it didn't fit the "man bad, woman good" pattern that feminism has imposed on how DV is treated. ii) Man abused by his girlfriend. Kicks, punches, weapons, hospitalised 3 times with broken bones, genital injuries, etc. Abuser was a foot shorter than victim, maybe half upper body strength. Victim arrested from hospital because he'd slapped the abuser to shock her enough for him to run out the doorway she was blocking while beating him with a baseball bat. She was completely uninjured (even then, he didn't use full force), he was hospitalised again (broken arm this time). But he was the one arrested, because he was a man. The anti-male sexism regarding DV is so extreme and so ubiquitous that facts are difficult to find. |

Monday, May 04, 2009 9:36:11 PM People *assume* that there's more violence against women than men, because we're all trained that way. In fact, there's far more violence against men than against women, in general. Which people are trained to dismiss on the basis that it's mostly men hitting men. Now think about that again, but substitute "blacks" for "men", i.e. substitute racism for sexism in order to illuminate the sexism we're all trained to accept without thought.Considering DV only, it is far from clear that more women than men are on the receiving end of physical violence. People are trained to assume so, but it's far from clear it's true. Studies have been done asking the same questions of large numbers of people of both sexes and the results were extremely similar for men and women. Relative strength may seem relevant, but it is largely irrelevant - what matters most is the will to do harm. Extra physical strength is not armour. |

Monday, May 04, 2009 8:15:39 PM The issue of domestic violence is very delicate. We usually believe that only women are victims, but definitely, men are also victims. The type of violence is usually different. Women are subjects of more physical violence because we are not as strong as men, physically speaking. But men are insulted, they are victims of raging jealousy, etc. That is also violence. Women have excersied violence on men as much as men on women...I think that to stop violence, we have to stop thinking in terms of "men" and "women". We have to think of the others as humans, just like us. Teach respect and tolerance... Easier said than done, sadly. |

Monday, May 04, 2009 4:19:37 PM Jesswalker: The crucial problem with your logic is that if a woman hits a man the man knows, or at least should know, is that no one is going to care but if a man hits a woman that is multiple years in prison it is sexist, yes as much as it anger people like you sexism works both ways |

Monday, May 04, 2009 3:44:34 PM Jesswalker: That's the problem with the whole thing. Violence against men is seen as less dramatic, because "men are supposed to defend themselves". But here's the point: They shouldn't have to. Besides: I think this statement is sexist, because you categorize all men to be strong and able/willing to defend themselves. And just because you think a sexist stereotype is positive, doesn't mean it isn't sexist. Long story short: I too think there should be a psa for violence against men. As well as against sexual abuse of boys or men. Because men shouldn't have to defend themselves... |

Monday, May 04, 2009 5:29:31 AM My dad was extremely physically abusive towards my mom, she left him when I was 2 (they were married for about 8 years) because she was so afraid of him killing her kids or herself. The day after the divorce he got married to a woman that was just as physically abusive as he was. Marrying a female version of himself made him stop being physically abusive at least :P |

Monday, May 04, 2009 4:53:38 AM How are you supposed to stop domestic violence anyway? The attacker is usually a violent drunk or a bully thru-n-thru like Angilion said, and there's no real way to enforce it without going Big Brother on every house in the nation, which would cause an uproar. But what do I know? Me only know fists are for wacking. |

Monday, May 04, 2009 12:51:29 AM "abuse against men will skyrocket."It already has, but hardly anyone gives a damn. After all, it's only men. It's not like they're people or anything. Besides, everything is men's fault anyway, didn't you know? Feminism has been particularly successful in the area of violence. |

Monday, May 04, 2009 12:39:40 AM "Wow, what possesses someone to want to beat a woman?"Much the same as the reasons why someone might want to beat a man, plus a disregard for the social norm that violence against a woman is many times worse than the same violence against a man. As for domestic violence, abusers are usually violent in other contexts as well. Probably right back to being a bully at school. They're that sort of person, on the whole. |

Monday, May 04, 2009 12:32:50 AM jesswalker: Thank you for serving as an example of the utter ignorance of the subject and grotesque victim-blaming sexist bigotry that people have been referring to.Is there anyone who is capable of rational thought and who thinks she has a point? If so, I'll be happy to explain why she's so wrong. |
