Sunday, May 03, 2009 2:58:16 PM '"We were the first nation in modern history to implement a democracy ( a federation, really)."WTF? Britain's parliamentary democracy considerably predates the USA's independence.' The United States was not formed as, and was never meant to be, a democracy. Look up Constitutional Republic. The Founding Fathers realized the dangers of a democracy. That realization is all but lost today by those that refer to themselves as "leaders" instead of "representatives", "politicians" instead of "statesmen". |

Sunday, May 03, 2009 2:08:48 PM Again, I don't know why I feel compelled to respond.I disagree with the video on the 'god endowed us..." part - man himself did. The British had a parliament, yes, but it was not particularly democratic: the House of Lords wielded more authority than the House of Commons, and it was not an elected body until the 19th C. I actually think you are right about the war games theory- about picking fights farther away. Easier to hate different civilizations, and I like Canadians. Also, if we wanted a long war, we would have picked it with an industrialized nation because we would need better equipment to fight them. In an insurgency, the most valuable weapons are special forces/boots on the ground, not billion dollar aircraft carriers and planes. But that again assumes the worst in humanity, that thousands have willingly collaborated in an effort to keep the whole idea secret. The far simpler, and probably correct theory, is the face-value story, not a national even global co |

Sunday, May 03, 2009 5:08:10 AM @neophoebus; because you don't poo on your own doorstep. You go to war with places very far away, so the risk to home isn't high, and the chances of your population turning on you is lower because you're attacking people of a different culture far away, making it difficult for your people to relate to them and feel sympathy for them. Also, you don't want easily-winnable wars; you want wars that drag on and on, keeping the need for your military industrial complex high. That would be my thinking if I were fuelling wars deliberately for financial gain. |

Sunday, May 03, 2009 3:50:42 AM You can stop the "we are the country that fights terrorism" rubbish right away. For decades we suffered in Britain from, at times, daily attacks on our country from a group of terrorists who were funded not by the American government, but by the American people. There were collection boxes in bars in Boston for the IRA and it was only illegal to do so just from just before 9/11.America is a great country (p.s. isn't Hawaii and Alaska states of the U.S. not connected to the mainland for the guy who said there weren't any?)in it's own way, and by God we are lucky it is unique, but this rubbish that it is a meritocracy is completely undone by the Kennedy/Bush families being so involved in the political system. The Bush family has had more say than any other on the shape of your nation, hardly what I would call a meritocracy. Finally, Europe is broken, but its ideals are far more worthy now than America's. |

Sunday, May 03, 2009 3:45:17 AM Yeah, people with higher educations don't subscribe to these same values...curse them (cause i mean, god forbid they actually know anything)! Except for the Europe-bashing and the "in god we trust" part i think the remaining two "values" are sound though. |

Sunday, May 03, 2009 1:58:27 AM I like you. >> Epicasaurus << I'll sum it up for you, at first the Americans were all like "meh just another patriot, high off the exhaust of his hummer" then the canadians jumped in there like 'whats all this about American values eh?' then the Europeans joined the party delivering their carefully executed knowledge of political history,'OMGWTF amorican values!1! if you guis like liberty so much then why do you got guns and start the holocaust' the Americans then proceeded to list any other incident outside of America where a firearm was touched shifting the blame like a game of pass the parcel meanwhile a few straglers sang the chorus to 'Why Cant We Be Friends'while the more politically aware commenters decided to get philosophical and define the very meaning of the word 'value'. Historical innacuracy was graced as fact, innocence was destroyed and flamers frollicked through the carnage. |

Saturday, May 02, 2009 10:54:59 PM He's not saying that we're better, guys. He keeps saying, "unique". That's not synonymous with better. Check your Thesaurus. And also yourself, prior to wrecking the previously stated self. ;P |
