hyybrucewayn pretty much summed it up.

D.U.M.B.

Darwin's Urban Mobility Bike. Just one ride and we garantee you will become an instant Darwin Award recipient or your money back... to your next of kin... if you have any.

You might not be as protected as you would be in a full-sized car with airbags, but it looks safer than a motorcycle or scooter, and there are plenty of people who use those every day. This looks like a good idea.

It looks like a cool thing, but I have serious doubts about it being a practical means of transportation. honestly, you couldn't pay me to drive that thing down a busy New York Street.

and as for the acronyms, how about
D.U.M.B. Darwin's Urban Mobility Bike

"Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility? Slapping together random words does not make a good acronym... just like slapping together a bike and a whateverthehellthatis does not make a good vehicle"

Cretinous Urban Numpty Transport System?

"It increases capacity to two passengers in a seated position; capable of carrying them up to anywhere between 25 and 35 mph (40 - 56 kph) for anywhere between 25 and 35 miles (40 - 56 km) on a single charge."

If the PUMA can actually do 35, then it can keep up with traffic on city streets. I don't see any visibility issues that can't be solved by just painting the thing a brighter color. It may not provide the impact protection of a car, but would be at least as safe as riding a motorcycle.

Of course, if the thing tops out at 25 mph, then it becomes a traffic hazard. So the viability really depends on how much power they can get into the production model.

Why not just put a plastic bubble roof and a slightly more powerful motor on something like this:

Seriously...it's reliable, extensively tested in real use, much safer and far cheaper than this PUMA thing.

Motorised wheelchairs are nothing new, and that's all this is. It's obviously not safe on the road. I'd rather have one of those mobility carriage things - they're much sturdier.

Looks like an over-sized baby stroller. Who is going to buy that? Get into an accident with an orange cone and you're wiped out!
