Monday, March 23, 2009 8:17:53 PM I cannot understand why that would not be impressive on some level. Even if she was making up numbers (which it does not appear she was), that takes a large degree of concentration, let alone memorization. Grow up people. Your blasé attitudes will get you nowhere. |

Monday, March 23, 2009 6:56:45 PM @ agamemnon most likely because teachers refer to it when they start teaching about irrational numbers. and to kids, its the best number since one hundred million trillion kazillion babaillion zigazillion times infinity. |

Monday, March 23, 2009 6:26:14 PM Memorizing a sequence of numbers, or anything sequenced really, is a measure of memory capacity, be it phone numbers or pi or as someone mentioned, e. The thing I don't understand is: why pi? why give credit to someone who can memorize pi and why's this to hold the numbers of pi so honed? It's like pi has pixie dust. Magical. *sighs* I came from a school that honored this skill - let's say this capacity for memory, be it outstanding or not, turned out to be useless in a world where computers exist and thus human minds need not take on their roles. There're other skills in this world to be honored. More human skills. |

Monday, March 23, 2009 5:04:01 PM "Her memorization is impressive, but why would you need to know that? It seems like a bit of a waste of time to me. Memorize some useful information."For people with exceptional memory, it doesn't take much effort to memorize something like 500 places of pi. Because not much effort is required, the time spent doing so isn't wasted as much as it would be for someone who required more time. Those of use with good memories think of it as a past-time, which has never had to serve any more useful purpose than entertainment. |
