And they are able to shoot you because they have guns! And they don't care if it's illegal to own a firearm or not, because they are criminals. People have a ton of hobbies, some of which I don't understand. My brother likes to shoot bambi, this guy liked to collect firearms. Hell, he was in the army for the longest time, it's what he knows. Don't judge people because they have hobbies that are different from yours. He did something illegal (look at Gunguys link for those who haven't to get the full story), and he paid for it. It's not the first time someone modified a semi-auto rifle and it won't be the last.

We don't need to kill our own food anymore, we have grocery stores. And a pot roast is a lot better for you than a mangy disease ridden rabbit that you pumped six bullets in.
"We also don't have to be worried about civil wars or government attacks on us, and with the development of a police force and burglar alarm systems, we don't much need them for protection.
All they really are is a way to commit violent crime."
That is about the dumbest reason I have ever heard for banning firearms. The vast majority of firearms are NOT used to commit crime. They are used for sport or for home protection. I work in the security industry. After an alarm goes off, the monitoring company will not be contacted for 30 seconds. Then they call the residence to see if it was a false alarm. Then they call the local police. Then they dispatch an officer. By the time an officer arrives to your location. 10-15 minutes have elapsed. Which gives the baddies plenty of time to shoot

GunGuy makes sense.

Personally, I don't believe we should be able to get guns, at least not the way we do. I think it should be intensely hard to purchase weapons.

All they really are is a way to commit violent crime. It's like the government allowing us to have cocaine "just to look at". It wouldn't make sense.

Thanks GunGuy308. I am glad I trusted my instincts on this one and not the media. I knew something didn't add up on this.

If he did really modify it to full auto then he should face the consequences.

I personally think the amendments need to be well, tweaked. Considering the 2nd amendment was great and partially made so that the government couldn't overpower us it really isn't effective now. Should our leaders decide to overtake us they could overpower the masses given the fire and man power available now.

800 Rounds fired before the misfire should easily prove that the gun was not modified. You don't go busting off that much ammo in a modified weapon at a firing range without it being totally obvious right off the start. But firing 800 consistent rounds prior to the gun misfiring a set of 2 then JAMMING means this was a misfire and nothing more. Someone somewhere is power tripping and trying to make some kind of point with this and failing horribly.

Anyone who is siding with the Govt is definitely anti-gun. and all this crap about modifying the weapon is nonsense. IT WAS A MISFIRE. Anyone who has shot a lot of ammo knows that happens. this guy wasn't doing anything illegal

Dont modify you're weapons folks, everyone knows that politicians feed and survive on things like gun policy and the ATF has nothing better to do obviously than crack down on you're neighbors...buy it legally, fire it legally, store it legally and you wont have a problem.

I'd have loved to have seen the charge sheet on that one - "On or about the nth of Monther, did Willfully and with Malicious Forethought, not discharge a weapon at Officer Plod nor at any other person, not endangering the public safety..."

Habute, this wasn't just about politics...If you read my post you would see that modifying a gun to be automatic (i.e. more than one bullet is fired with one trigger pull) is illegal. Also, this guy did not register his guns and he does not have a license to sell guns. Hello! Of course they're going to investigate him, it's illegal.

"Why, for any reason, would anyone have a gun like that anyway? The thing looks like it could take down a T-Rex. "

Looks can be decieving, there are more powerfull semi automatics that look like hunting rifles that are just as legal. Its just the looks that make it more intimidating.

GunGuy's link explains it better then this story... The weapon was MODIFIED to fire more than 1 round per trigger pull. This wasn't a simple sear malfunction. However, one still has to wonder why Uncle Sam came cracking down with such full force on this... Perhaps politics were in play somehow.

(N1) May an unlicensed person make a machine gun?
Generally, no. However, if documentation can be provided, along with the Application to Make a Machinegun, which establishes that the weapon is being made for distribution to a Federal or State agency, an individual may be permitted to make the machine gun. [18 U.S.C. 922(o)(2), 27 CFR 479.105(e)]

Ummm, Victory...I just looked at the ATF website and it says that it's illegal to possess (unless it was possessed prior to 1986). Also, there's another section that states that it is illegal to manufacture machines guns unless they're licensed to manfucature machine guns for a state or federal agency. According to the article that Gun Guy posted, Olofson's guns were also not registered.

From the ATF website:

ATF Rul. 2002-5 922(o) of Title 18, United States Code, makes it unlawful for any person to transfer or possess a machinegun, except a transfer to or by or under the authority of the United States or any department or agency thereof or a State or a department, agency, or political subdivision of; or any lawful transfer or lawful possession of a machinegun lawfully possessed before May 19, 1986.

One, this is really old. Two, it's a case of GOA lying and Lou Dobbs getting gulled. Truth is, Olofson made a machine gun and gave it to his friend, telling him NOT to put the selector switch to the rear position. The guy did anyway on a public range, and when he got nabbed with the gun by some off-duty cops who were there, he rolled on Olofson. The jury heard the whole case and ALL of the evidence and convicted him. This site has the affidavits that every law-abiding gun owner who is interested in the case should read:

http://lagniappeslair.blogspot.com/2008/...

Never, EVER believe anything that GOA puts out. They're just hyping it to try to get members and donations and lying to gin up outrage is much more effective than admitting that a criminal made a machine gun and got caught.

That guy should get the death penalty!!! How dare he hold a trigger down and fire MORE than one bullet at a time! *Gasp* The HORROR!!!!

I'm sorry, but in the end it's all the same. A bullet comes out really fast from the barrel. If the guy was doing something illegal, fine him and move on. Don't throw the goddamned book at him.

@goaliejerry

If the BATFE is to be believed, then yes, that man commited a crime. It is as the saying goes, "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing." I'm gulity of this myself, and I'm definitely going to research before I form an opinion from now on.
