Tuesday, March 17, 2009 5:08:38 PM Oh my gosh! Obama acknowledged people other than Christians?! You mean, this isn't a Christian country?! No way, riots!F-cking stupid how so many religious types are getting butt-hurt over this. America is not just your country, morons. Funny... how some religious folks can spew all the religious talk they want, but the second an Athiest expresses their views, it's an "attack on religion." Hypocritical is what it is. |

Wednesday, March 11, 2009 5:46:31 AM "What matters is bettering MYSELF and being a servant to my own judgement, will and ambitions."That's as unprovable as God. You've just adopted secular morals over religious ones. Pick your assumptions, everybody. |

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 9:42:13 PM "WHY DO ATHEISTS ALWAYS HAVE TO COME OUT AND SAY IT WHEN SOMEBODY MENTIONS GOD?"~~~ Why do religious people have to talk about "God" than? Atheists have the same amount of freedom to say their beliefs as religious people do. |

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 8:58:39 PM this is my religion: I wake up in the wee hours of the morning to go to class. Then I go to work. Come home shower and go to bed. Repeat. There is not 1 God in that equation. It doesn't matter. It doesn't exist. What matters is bettering MYSELF and being a servant to my own judgement, will and ambitions. I need not a higher power to dictate or guide any of my actions. And I'm doing AWESOME. And once I die I'll be worm food. I'm totally ok with that. Cause thats how it is and theres nothing u can do to change it. |

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 4:12:06 PM Come on, does it really matter who's side your on, whatever belief you have you're gunna cry about persecution. Firstly athiests are persecuted by believers, but believers even persecute each other, and non-believers persecute believers, what ever you believe is what you think is the utmost truth and everyone else is stupid as poo, and i agree, they all are, but so are you for having to point it out. That means believers and non believers in any sect. There are tons of ads out there by christians, so you can't even act like a few athiest posters threw off your groove and forced their opinion on you, and if they did, then truly you don't believe strongly enough in your own religion. If you can't handle someone else having their own beliefs that are different than yours, then you are just afraid that you are wrong, and are scared they can change your mind if you think they are right. So quit whining, its stupid, atheists should be as free to practice as any, and free to post sign |

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 1:32:00 PM SherbertFizz: Take a close look at the comments here. I think most if not all of the hurtful comments are coming from athiests. 'Religion is a bunch of crap.' 'beleiving in a god/gods is drating stupid lol'. And you mentioned Christians trying to shove God down atheists throats. That tends to be a very small minority of Christians do that and I agree that they are wrong in doing so, but where I live (UK) it seems that many atheists shove their non-belief down our (Christians) throats. Over here it is frowned upon to publicly express your faith in anyway e.g. a woman who worked for British Airways was fired for wearing a necklace with a small cross on it and she wasn't showing it off or anything like that. Also people here usually get into trouble when they send Christmas cards with 'Merry Christmas' on them to work colleagues. Its like society wants to box us up and throw us into a dark corner somewhere. |

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 1:31:03 PM Apparently Sherbetfizz hasn't read about 1 in 4 of the posts in this thread. "Athiests don't speak out against God". Ad campaign in Canada. Ad Campaign in the UK. Poem in the US along the nativity. In this thread: Redbrother, Steve41, DeadlyLegion, Alewares, Earthshone, Keg74, Gloostikk, Monsdurr. Assuming I've not missed anyone along the way. Everyone I've mentioned before. It is a constant Barrage. Look up Stephen Fry's "debate" with Hitchens. Only debate I've ever watched where two people with the same viewpoint talk about how right they both are. Topic? God.

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 12:39:04 PM "Maybe I'm just lucky."Then I am lucky as well. I enjoy warm friendships with two ardent Catholics and though they are fully aware of my lack of belief, we treat each other with mutual respect. It's a bit frustrating when my atheism comes up at work and I had someone sort of condescend to me by saying that I just 'had questions', as if to imply I'm not comfortable with my views. Give me hard evidence and I'll change my mind, but until then their argument isn't getting any stronger. |

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 11:30:58 AM I dunno. I get along pretty well with religious people. My best friend is a Baptist with heavy creationist leanings and I've never encountered any animosity from his family or church friends for not believing what they do. Maybe I'm just lucky. |

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 9:56:51 AM The only thing that annoys me about religious people is they are always trying to shove God down our (atheists) throats. Atheists don't speak out against God, even though we could. Religious people can be really hurtful and patronizing despite the fact that they have NO evidence for a God. Not only that but according to the bible you are not allowed to judge anyone. Atleast follow your own rules. |

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 6:15:34 AM It definitely works both ways, as much as atheists like to claim a monopoly on persecution. First of all, worldwide, Christians are easily more persecuted than atheists. There just aren't stories about atheists being killed or jailed for their beliefs, but it happens regularly with Christians. Secondly, even in America it works both ways. I work in a highly professional field, and had a lot more trouble than my friends in finding a job, even though I had better qualifications than most of them, because I had done some missionary work. |

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 4:39:07 AM That's ridiculous, and it's not limited to this thread. It's how every single IAB thread goes ever. With Atheists outnumbering Theists 3 to 1. |

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 4:35:11 AM But my point is, I'm not seeing it. People talk to me (whether I'm in the UK or Dubai) as if I should accept how atheists are treated as the norm around the world. Furthermore, I'm not seeing the American oppression. Maybe that's because I'm not there, but I just don't see it in the slightest. I cannot physically find an online forum outside of Christian specific forums where Theists outnumber atheists, despite massively Ameri-Centric populations. Hell, even the Christian Message boards have a greater than 15% Atheist contingent. Where are these Christians that make up 90% of the USA? From someone outside of the US, don't you think it makes it look like you're saying you're being oppressed by Unicorns, when it is actually a struggle to physically find an American Christian? Lets review this thread: Page 1: 2 Christians. 1 Muslim. 13 Atheists. 4 Comments derogatory to religion. |

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 4:07:57 AM Baalthazaq: well you are talking about the UK and there's quite a difference there. Hell i live in Sweden and 80% of the populace is secularized, but that's not really the point is is? The point is that if you are an atheist in the US you are pretty likely to get shafted :P |

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 3:59:06 AM Not only that, our politicians don't mention God because it gets negative reactions, our comedians are hugely non-religious. There is no-one I know in the united kingdom who mentions God in a non disparaging way. See Dara O Briain, see Ricky Gervais, see Bill Bailey, see Ross Noble, see Derren Brown. I'm not just naming atheists here, I'm just naming people from British TV off the top of my head. 66% of the UK population have no connection with any religion or church. 18% of the British public say they are a practicing member of an organized religion. Link to source.

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 3:43:09 AM Coming in to this far too late to make a suitable contribution, I'll summarize my opinion on the matter:I work for an atheist. My best friend is an atheist. Most of my friends are atheists. I married an atheist. My mother is agnostic. Most people I knew in the UK growing up did not believe in God. So quite frankly, I just don't get this at all. Watch part 1 and 2 of this. This is the UK's closest thing to Regis and Kelly we have.
Notice the different tone to American shows. |

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 3:17:34 AM I don't think it's about taking sides, it's about giving a group that obviously exists a heads up and tbh it's about time someone did. I find the stigma associated with atheism in the US to be silly and hurtful to say the least, i don't shun religious people just because i don't hold the same belief and i think i should be granted the same liberty. People doesn't have to stop being religious, they just have to accept that not everyone is. Why is it that it that blind faith with no basis in reality is good and belief in what we can see, understand and measure bad? |

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 2:40:18 AM ON TOPIC:Obama is just trying to unify the US, he's not agreeing with non-believers, he's just tolerating them. IMHO the thing with the US is they have put a label on everything: your're either democrat or republican, christian or atheist, conservative or liberal, against the war on terror or in favor, etc. and if you don't agree with the mayority you're a communist/terrorist/ or whatever the enemy is. I think this has confronted a lot of groups and created stereotypes. You can be an atheist and be in favor of the war on terror and against abortion. I think what Obama is trying to do is to please/tolerate/include everyone and unify the people of the US with the goverment. I hope he succeeds but it's going to be very tricky for him. |
