Monday, February 23, 2009 4:04:14 PM This is actually what happens to a lesser extent when bullets come into contact with flesh. This is why exit holes are bigger than entry holes. |

Monday, February 23, 2009 10:59:12 AM >ziggyIts due to conservation of energy, and the fact that the back part of the bullet decelerates while the front part is hitting the steel plate. The energy in the tip of the bullet has to increase, since it is receiving energy from the back part of the bullet by decelerating it. Since speed is part of the energy of the bullet (also heat), the tip of the bullet must wind up going faster than it originally was. This also explains why each ripple that moves outwards is slower than the last, since there is less mass in the bullet remaining to propel it outwards, thus less energy, thus slower. At the very end, the back part of the bullet has very little outward velocity. |

Monday, February 23, 2009 10:37:48 AM ziggy - The bullet slows because it has to penetrate an object, the "ripples" move faster because the energy of the speed from the bullet has been transfered outwards, and has no further resistance acting against it. Its analogous to someone doing a cannon ball into a pool. The spray distributes itself much faster than the person who begins to slow immediately on contact.Word. |

Monday, February 23, 2009 10:07:55 AM Ziggyzaggy - as far as I'm aware it is not going faster but is in fact just changing in the amount of surface area it has, so basically it looks faster but it isn't . . . . although i may be wrong |

Monday, February 23, 2009 9:55:34 AM anyone willing to explain how the "ripples" that the bullet made are traveling faster than the bullet itself? This isn't me calling it fake, by the way, I am genuinely curious.
