Tuesday, February 10, 2009 4:51:01 AM TheSharpest Well, this is interesting. What just happened here? Back on topic: aero is right. Basically there are 2 things that determine your velocity (not in a vacuum): surface which is fronting the wind and mass. Since a heavy person can weight twice as much a a thin person without doubling their surface, weight is more determinant than surface. Therefore, heavy people fall faster. Unless, as the author stated, a thin person employs one of those crazy suicidal positions (such as head down) to further reduce their wind-fronting surface.OMFG you are so wrong. If they are different weights but the same surface area (i.e. same drag), then they will fall at the same rate. Weight has absolutely nothing to do with the speed other then a heavier person might be fatter (i.e. more drag) Here, go learn something: Ask a Scientist |

Monday, February 09, 2009 6:00:49 AM "Uhm...no. No it doesn't. how about a feather and a block of conrete? do you think that they fall at the same speed?"Without other factors like wind resistance a feather and block of concrete would fall at the same speed they meant something falling with just the force of gravity. |

Sunday, February 08, 2009 7:07:59 PM I wish I had the balls to do that but I can't even go on a plane without freaking out and depending on the minibar. Loved in the video when the dude did the superman arms though |

Sunday, February 08, 2009 3:03:43 AM "everyone will fall at the same speed not taking into account wind resistance on clothes and what not but everything on earth falls the same speed regardless of weight"Uhm...no. No it doesn't. how about a feather and a block of conrete? do you think that they fall at the same speed? Skydiving is bloody scary, but maybe someday =] |

Saturday, February 07, 2009 11:06:36 PM Ok, just to clear things up.Gravity makes all things fall at the same rate, but AIR slows them down. So heavier people do fall faster. |

Saturday, February 07, 2009 11:32:27 AM I'm guessing he's an idiot, but only cause its funnier. Oh and none of this was even mildly "fascinating." |

Saturday, February 07, 2009 8:42:06 AM i went skydiving. none of this is true. the rip cord is almost always automatic, you cannot talk during freefall. no one will hear you, you dont go up when the chute is deployed. it seems that way in videos because the camera man often deploys his parachute a couple seconds after the other person, you wont die if your unconscious during freefall, everyone does not fall at the same speed. you can actually roughly control your speed, NEVER pack your own chute. always let a professional do it because thats the ONLY thing they do and they are really really good at it, you cannot deploy your chute at any height. too high it wont inflate, too low you wont slow down enough, you probably dont need a mask because you can hold your breath until you get to about 8,000 feet. that would be like 60 seconds, higher the altitude the SAME danger factor because of terminal velocity, its actually safer because you have more time to prepare yourself, if you hit pavement at 120 mph you'll die no matter wha |

Saturday, February 07, 2009 2:56:43 AM for the noobs who suck in physics: the heavier people DO NOT FALL FASTER;however, due to the wording of this statement, most people would assume "falling faster" to mean the ACCELERATION. Thus, it is easy to refute that heavier people fall faster. That said. Heavier people could have higher terminal velocity (refer to terminal velocity formula) |
