Exploding whales evolved as a defense against whaling. The whalers would bring the whale alongside, and then the whale would explode and blow a hole in the ship and sink it. This is how Captain Ahab lost his leg - whales don't have teeth, and so couldn't possibly have bitten it off. Instead, he was the victim of a whale explosion. |
