Friday, December 26, 2008 10:08:35 AM Honestly, I see no reason to actually go through with it. Keep it as a reminder of the past, but leave it as just that, only a reminder. I don't believe it would do anyone any good to start cloning a species that died out so long ago. Only give a few people their 15 minutes of fame.Save the species we have now, don't waste time cloning ones that are already gone. |

Monday, December 01, 2008 4:51:07 PM Whats the chances of the mammoth having the same epigenetics as a modern elephant? Moreover, DNA binding proteins, DNA methylation, miRNA siRNA will all have degraded shortly after death. Just one essential house-keeping gene being broken or degraded will render the project a fatal failure, just one mutated tumour supressor may yield uncontrolled cancer, ionisation by millenia of cosmic rays, free radicals and background radiation will have mutated sequences to pieces, have the genes got telomeres? Will the calf be born middle aged and die like Dolly did due to old damaged DNA and short telomeres? All these things have to be overcome, and we don't have the answers yet. Don't give me that "Greatest minds" rubbish, these people are after funding to overcome these problems pure and simple, and if they ever do it, it wont be in your lifetime. Believe if you feel you need to. |

Monday, December 01, 2008 9:36:50 AM I personally think this is going to be awesome. Can clones make babies? Or are they sterile? |

Monday, December 01, 2008 7:48:23 AM Man, I can't believe how everyone is going on about how it wont survive and whatever. People, these are some of the worlds greatest minds at work here, don't you think they would have taken precautions, made plans, do you honestly just think they said "Oh, lets clone a woolly mammoth and see how it survives in these conditions!"? No... They will make environments with the right conditions, they will isolate it and make sure it is safe to be near... |

Sunday, November 30, 2008 11:29:38 PM i really think its pointless to continue with this project. the technology is their, and we know we can do it now. why clone it? you gonna sell it to a zoo? we cant just let these wooly mammoth's roam around. im sure it could survive o earth as it is now, even tho it was designed for harsh cold. but it could destroy eco systems, and this thing could even have some imborn disease that could spread to humans, we dont know. there really is no pro to cloning a mammoth aside from being able to say that you did..and on cloning neanderthals(cant remember spelling) NO! not becuase im religouse or anything rediculous like that. but the same points as the wooly mammoth come up, why? diseases we may not be able to fight or control, possible planet of the apes scenario... |

Sunday, November 30, 2008 9:33:02 PM I was discussing this with my husband and our friends over dinner and we came to the conclusion that even if they did manage to successfully clone a woolly mammoth, it wouldn't survive. The climate required for such an animal to survive hardly exists anymore. Not to mention life on this planet was drastically different back then. Other animals have had time to adapt to the changes. |

Sunday, November 30, 2008 8:02:05 PM "Also , how come most religious folk dont get upset over animal cloning yet get so angry over a human being cloned? God created animals too according to you, and if playing god is illegal how is it a higher crime to clone huamans as opposed to animals?"For the record, I think cloning, stem cell research and any other medical sciences that could potentially save or improve lives should be followed to their fullest. Cloning a human just to say you did it seems kind of pointless, but I still don't think it is against my faith. |

Sunday, November 30, 2008 7:56:15 PM Lionheart: "...we have almost wiped out 90% of the species on earth..."what? No we haven't check your facts. What you're thinking of is that "90% if the creatures that have existed on Earth are now extinct." we aren't even to blame for 1% of those extinctions. Which i think is funny you bring that fact up- As if you dont believe in evolution and that as religion says the world is only a few thousand years old... how'd all those species get into the ground :P But interesting article never the less, I'd heard about this a while back when the Siberian mammoth was found with a bunch of skin and hair on it and a Japanese genetics corp bought it and planned to clone it.
Also , how come most religious folk dont get upset over animal cloning yet get so angry over a human being cloned? God created animals too according to you, and if playing god is illegal how is it a higher crime to clone huamans as opposed to animals? Ah well- just a random thought. |
