ryan99, the media have special rights due to the free world having a free press. If they are on public property the police do not have the right to tell a member of the media to stop filming. The only thing the media can't do is film children without the consent of their parents which is why you often see footage of childrens feet or out of focus footage. In this case the media is not subject to the whim of the police officer especially if they are not involved with the protest. |

How can you lean towards the cop he has no legal right to tell someone to stop filming in a public place just becasue he wears a badge and a uniform does not give him carte blanche to dictate to people in that manner!
He was wrong and is a bad example of a poorly trained cop on a power trip! |

If a cop tells you to put a camera away, you should probablly put it away...You have to reason to defy him, though the officer has no reason to act like that. I am leaning more towards the cop's side right now. |

Police forces around the country need to get serious about training cops properly. I keep seeing case after case of cops who think that they can order someone to do just about anything, and then physically assault them if they don't comply 100% immediately.I know cops have a pooty job, and I suspect that most of them are doing their jobs well. Still, there are just too many of these stereotypical videos involving some cop on a power trip turning a routine interaction into a career-ending video on the Internet. |

Yeah, I'm sure that the conversation between the councilwoman and the cop went as she described. I'm sure that it was more along the lines of "Let that guy the drat go, or your ass is fired." |

as long as the camera man is not creating/involved with any sort of violence, on public property, and not taking pictures of anything that compromises national security, the police has no right to confiscate, delete, or otherwise obstruct the cameraman |

this is the reason why the assesment tests to be a cop need to be a hell of alot tougher. that way non-nice individuals who just want power cant become policemen |

Bad cop, no donuts! The main problem none of his fellow officers stepped in and stopped his bad behavior. This tells me their is a bigger problem in the department as a whole. |

Then the Liberal will find a way to blame his behavior on you and say that you aren't doing enough to help the black angst. Then the liberal will contact the ACLU because he feels his rights are being violated when you stare at him in a very dumbfounded manner. Then he will get you arrested for clubbing baby seals.

He's in a public area, cops can't tell the media to stop filming in public areas just because they don't like that a camera is pointed at them, especially if they are totally unrelated to the story.
