Friday, September 25, 2009 9:36:36 AM this is basically the first steps to replicating emotions. if they can master instruments. then they could easily imitate human emotions. |

Saturday, November 15, 2008 1:34:53 PM this scares me. i don't care if a robot can be programmed to improvise, music is created to express the emotions of the musician, and a robot can't do that. if we begin introducing robot musicians, we lose the emotion in music. |

Saturday, November 15, 2008 1:26:19 AM That would be awesome if I had one in my home...at least not a violin player but I'd like a guitar playing robot =D |

Friday, November 14, 2008 11:18:09 PM I would like to see these in Malls and other public places that have background music... Live music is so much better than speakers, even if played by a mechaform. |

Friday, November 14, 2008 10:19:53 PM (last post too long)key points in the song, i.e., at those "key points" that it has heard improvisation in human performances. There we go. If music is defined by the ability of the performer to improvise while playing music, then, in a strictly literal sense, the robot is now playing like a human. In a nutshell: Robot pieces together improvisation pre-performance. Robot inserts improvisation at points specified by the programmers which allow it to do so at random times during the performance. Wait... this means that the performance would have to be in real-time for those "improvisation" pieces to be actual improvisations. Modern processors could handle that *cough* fruityloops *cough*. So, almost complete rewrite of my idea, but not totally. tl;dr: robots will learn to improvise. and not just in violin playing. |

Friday, November 14, 2008 10:13:57 PM while it is true that some may believe that "music" can only be "true" music if it involves inspiration and "human" soul, that, i.e., what was played by the robot, was, actually music. So, robots play music. Now, the point that we'll have to worry about is when robots actually DO learn to improvise.Interesting. Here we go: Robot records samples of the same song played by X>25 talented musicians. It then recognizes tune and pitch deviation at key points. It then formulates its own "improvisation" based upon these that it has heard. But in order to do this, it would need to edit its own coding of the song to be played. So, the programmers must insert sections of code within the robot's own programming to allow for this "improvisation", like adding certain sections in the programming of the song that would allow for pre-play insertion of pre-determined "improvisation notes" by the robot itself into the song at |

Friday, November 14, 2008 8:42:44 PM I've been so desensitized. I don't even consider it impressive anymore unless it has some form of artificial intelligence. |

Friday, November 14, 2008 4:15:04 PM I think it's more significant that any home computer can perfectly play any piece of recorded music. |

Friday, November 14, 2008 3:51:05 PM "It's still a product of people."The robot is a product of people. The programming is a product of people. Obviously someone who knows music had a part in it, donating their musical ideas... a product of people. I'm not disagreeing with you, I just like arguing. =D |

Friday, November 14, 2008 3:15:16 PM "What? Could you explain yourself on that one?"Why yes I could :) Music is from the soul, a human creation to express emotion. Mindless gears and electricity moving a bow on a string is not music. |
