Wednesday, November 12, 2008 5:41:22 AM If the kid was seriously disabled and could never do anything for himself, then it would be a little more justified. However, he can "attend a normal school and play sports including cricket and football." It sounds as if he's only mildly retarded, and wouldn't be as much of a drain on taxpayers as his father is a benefit to the country. |

Tuesday, November 11, 2008 7:48:10 AM you make downs syndrome sound like a cold. a doctor bringing a downs child into the world is being selfish. he's put his desire of having a child in front of the child itself. a life of dependency, perhaps loveless and shortened life to fulfill a personal need is obnoxious coming from a doctor no less. the world doesn't need more stupid people. we've had enough. |

Tuesday, November 11, 2008 3:09:12 AM Huh? What's all this talk I see? The kid only has Down Syndrome. Gosh. I reckon people who think it is 'selfish' or 'too hard' obviously aren't close to anyone with serious disabilities. |

Monday, November 10, 2008 8:24:31 PM Nico: I agree. My mother has always told me the same thing, and it took me a long time to realize what she meant. It is cruel to bring someone into this world who will only suffer. That being said, not all debilitating diseases can be diagnosed while in the womb. If, though, I knew for certain that the child would not ever be able to live a happy, independent life, I don't know if I could carry him/her to term. Also, many people abort for the same reasons financially. They cannot afford to raise the child, but do not see adoption as a happy option either. It is really hard to adopt in America, and that is partially why so many American babies are from other countries. Our adoption system needs to be revamped a bit, I think. All I know is I'm adopting 100% American babies. =] When I'm over 30 and can care for the child financially on my own... |

Monday, November 10, 2008 6:05:47 PM Question: If someone is eligible for government pension, but proves they can work, are they still eligible to permanently move to a country with an immigration quota? I ask because I want to move to Europe when I'm able to, but I'm disabled enough to need social security until I have a degree. (I can't work almost all normal jobs, and will probably have to freelance some of the time when I do have the degree.) It's also relevant to this article, sort of.Australia has the right to do this. The family should appeal it, though. Since we're on the subject, I personally believe that it is selfish to bring a child into the world if they will have a significant disability and will never be even remotely independent. It is ultimately up to the parents, but if the child is unable to speak, move, etc, then they seriously have to consider the child's quality of life. This doesn't apply to this kid, however, because he is able to at least some normal activities. |

Monday, November 10, 2008 6:05:38 PM This article is old. almost a month old in fact. on the face of it, it is bad, yet there was such a public outcry when it was on the news that any appeal will go through right away, and if not there will be several people losing their jobs, Kevin Rudd (our PM) will make an apperence like he does in anything that can get his face on tv and they will be allowed to stay. |

Monday, November 10, 2008 5:38:57 PM i dont think i could honestly care for someone who would be dependant on me my whole life. I'm talking about knowingly giving birth to someone who would be wheelchair dependant, hand fed, nappy changed their whole lives. I just couldnt do it. Kudos to the people who do, seriously, cause taking care of kids is bloody hard work... but i dont honestly have it in me.*waits to be beaten up and flamed upon* |

Monday, November 10, 2008 5:26:26 PM actually no. not a nazi. but i ask you, is it selfish to bring a life into the world who is essentially dependent on their parents for life?that article clearly stated that the child was capable of attending public school, playing on the sports teams with other children. that proves that he was not dependent on his parents. oh yeah, and last time i checked, ALL children are dependent on their parents/guardians for life. |

Monday, November 10, 2008 5:19:02 PM If the good doctor had taken his wife for amniocentesis then he would have known his baby was retarded could have forced his wife to get an abortion, he'd be a citizen of oz and we wouldn't be discussing thispeople with down syndrome deserve life just as much as you. |

Monday, November 10, 2008 4:54:29 PM zerocyde - why should politicians make you lose respect for a country? all pollies are screwed up. I didn't hear about this, but I'm sure (and like adrift angel noted) people would have been angry about it!also sabrewolf... we are most toally not the worst country. I can think of worse (and im not thinking of america or europe) Yes we have a doctor shortage... try going to Logan Hospital, its hell... but i don't see why they can't make an exception. I mean, we get a doctor and the doctor gets his family, whats wrong with that? |

Monday, November 10, 2008 4:31:33 PM I just thought of the guy with Down's Syndrome who kicked the little boy. To be frank, every country has a right to secure its borders and allow in whomever it wants . I don't see a problem with this, out side of the emotional "Political Correctness" of the situation. Sorry, but laws aren't always PC. |

Monday, November 10, 2008 4:08:55 PM If they let the guy in there would be precedent for other disabled people wanting to get into australia, and when a disabled person is 18 he or she will most likely be taking government pension. So make your choice... one doctor, or a thousand disabled forigners getting our tax money? |

Monday, November 10, 2008 3:41:46 PM And why should Australia feel ashamed? When we all found out, everyone was outraged and complaining about it. We're one of the most easy-going places in the world. The only people who should be ashamed are the ones that denied the family. |
