Lionhart:
Are you kidding?
The middle east includes:
Saudi Arabia: 14% of the world's oil.
Iran: 3% of the World's Oil
UAE: 3% of the World's Oil
Kuwait: 3% of the World's Oil

Or if we're doing total proven reserves:
Saudi: 20% world reserves.
Iran: 10% world reserves.
Kuwait: 8% of world reserves.
UAE: 7% of world reserves.
Not to mention the other 11 countries in the Middle East, or the other 10 on top of that in "Greater Middle East" if your graph includes that.

Oil exports via the CIA. Iraq produces ~2% as stated earlier.

Oil reserves via the CIA. Iraq admittedly contains ~8% of the world reserves.

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT?!?! Its a H.O.A. community. I live in a HOA community and they have towed my car for parking overnight, taken my trashcans for leaving them out overnight, and removed my christmast decorations.

I'm sure Davy could give us accurate figures since finding oil is his job, but this would tend to indicate you're completely wrong:

That is just outright terrible. My father has been in Iraq for the past 7 months, he doesn't come back for 5 more. I don't understand how someone could be so anal as to take down welcome home signs? I would have made new ones....tacky ones....with glitter.

When did this convo turn into an argument on "an inconvenient truth"?

By the way, those few of you that are actually trying to sound intelligent on oil consumption are way, way oversimplifying the whole issue. I love how someone says something on a forum with a certain finality to it and they put it to us like its the only argument to be had... and they are playing a game of I WIN.

I used to be that turd...or am i still? hmmm

I got two brothers in the marines and one of them will be in Iraq. If somebody didn't let me welcome him home, I would eat that person's soul.

I petition that whoever complained about that sign be sent to Iraq.

I may not support the war, but Damn it, I support our troops, whom are risking their lives every day, regardless of the stupidity of the cause, they are still risking their lives. and to have some soulless prick think that welcoming one of them home is somehow "Political", infuriates me.

nowadays we live a lifestyle that is unsustainable....we use thousands of litres of fuel a year, buy food in plastic packaging that we throw away, have all the lights on and the tv and the hair dryer....we use and use. and all these resources come from somewhere. it causes tension and war and ugly scenes. such is the way of the world. but to complain about wars and mistreatment from the comfort of your heated home in front of your tv and then go for a drive in your suv is to be a bit of a hypocrite. ever seen that video on youtube, 'meet your meat'? similar concept in this case. people are in effect complaining about how the poor cows are killed whilst they eat their burgers. in reality, we all share some blame for whats happening in the world today, to absolve yourself of blame you'd have to turn your lights out and walk to work each day. if we really want to solve this problem we need to end our dependence on oil and the middle east will shrink into insignificance.

Quick note:
Iraq provides the world with ~2% of it's oil.

Long story short, the liberals are probably quite happy with putting 2% less oil in their cars if it means not having to invade a country for a billion pounds a year.

Also, if everyone driving a 20MPG SUV traded it in for a 20.4MPG SUV we could have avoided this whole thing. that's saying nothin of the occassional run of the mill SUVs that near almost 30MPG, or perhaps even... I dunno... taking the kids to school in a CAR and getting 40MPG.

But obviously that's not as reasonable a solution as invading a country killing a few thousand civilians, losing a few thousand troops, propping up new dictators and weakening your reputation worldwide as oil-hungry war-whores.

Okay, I'm about a liberal as it gets and I find this pretty wrong. There must have been some underlying issue between the HOA guy that took it down and the family that's not being reported here, because that guys deserves to get punched in the throat if he just went ahead and took them down for HOA policy reasons. Some people take themselves too seriously.
As far as the ugly reality of how gas gets in our tanks, we should pay for it if we don't have it, not completely f**k the world up by taking it by force. I think a certain IQ should be required to use the internets.

Also some HOA communities are not giant conglomorate cookie cutter suburbs. Some HOA's are two houses that happen to be connected. Generalizing only works with machine guns.

WhenIsLunch: this is what happened to freedom of speech. Someone goes to a police officer and says "Hey there! I have half a ton of explosives wired in that nearby orphanage and I am planning to detonate in 30 minutes. Have a nice day!"
Everything has restrictions. This shouldn't.

"Liberals are happy to put gas in their tanks, but squeamish about how it gets there"

From one of the many many many countries you're allied with through trade agreements.... Oh God I can't handle it, I'm going to be sick.

Look if you want to live in a neighborhood that dictates how you live then by all means move there. If you do however, you lose your right to b*tch and moan when you break the rules. Imho, i think everyone who lives in a HOA community is a douchebag. this family included.

As an American, it really pisses me off how pussified America has become. We get offended by everything nowadays. Get over it, your feelings aren't that important. HOA's in my mind are unconstitutional. I don't think ANYONE has a right to tell you what you can do land that you own. If you're not hurting anyone then people need to mind their own business. Lastly, I don't support this stupid war, but I see nothing offensive about a family welcoming home a daughter they are rightfully proud of. Screw your property values. You won't lose a dime of value by someone next door putting up a picture of their child who is coming home from war!

"They removed the welcome home signs and balloons and flags," says Natalie Boitet.

Boitet says when they tried to recover the signs it turned into a confrontation with the association manager. - Article

It looks like the HOA didn't even ask for the signs to be removed, it sounds like they confiscated them while the family was setting up somewhere else...
