Piratewillis has made probably the most sensible statement in the whole debate.
Rugby, particularly league, is a flowing game, and therefore is one of endurance more than strength. A lot of the professional players are a lot smaller than you would think. Built like fireplugs, but have an endurance capability. American footballers probably do hit harder. But rugby players are not always trying to hit as hard as possible, as dangerous tackling is against the rules, due to the lack of padding. So it's like trying to compare an apple with an orange. Two totally different things.

I would say the difference between rugby and football is that football is a more civilized looking form of kicking the poo out of people. Rugby just kind of goes out there and plays.

"Blah blah blah, my sport is better, blah blah blah."

All I know is I wouldn't be able to survive ANY hit. So there!

Ok... everyone needs to shut up about football being the best most brutal sport in the world. You must be forgetting that rugby is played 40 minutes straight, No downs, every player plays both offense and defense. The big guys on the field can run just as fast as running backs in football. There is a reason why rugby is the second most popular sport in the world. Ok now for football, there is a reason football requires pads. Notice how as football evolved it went from rugby-type players to a team of DIFFERENT types. You have the little guys who are tanks and run fast, and the BIG, SLOW, POWERFUL guys. Football players are machines who run a certain route or block and are meant for one purpose. Rugby is all about the players mental skill in being both physically good and choosing the strategy. EVERYONE can agree that both rugby and football players are total beasts and aren't to be reckoned with. Plus, we are all forgetting a sport called hockey. Hockey should be considered up there.

In the Antic Rome, gladiator were wearing pads to fight with glaives against other gladiators or against wild animals.

American footballers wear pads to run into each others with a ball.

I leave conclusions to the forum. ^^

only people who think rugby is a harder hitting game then football are people that have never played football. Real football not in your damn backyard, and there is a reason those guys are playing rugby...its because they are not good enough to plat football
