Friday, October 17, 2008 11:29:57 AM this video is flawed by human error, there is almost no way that you can have a stop watch do that. 1 of 2 things happened. 1. It looks like he started them at the same time but b/c he's human he may have started one a fraction of a second after the other. 2. The watches are standard watches, driven by quartz (to keep time) and a battery (to display) with mass production being how it is, there are no two watches that would keep the exact same time.Try for yourself. Set your own watch to your cell phone, and look at the differences a few hours later. chances are that your watch will be faster b/c it uses crystal to regulate the time while your cellphone constantly updates the time and processes the seconds as they pass. |

Wednesday, July 23, 2008 8:16:48 AM I'm sorry to say it but this is completely and utterly fake. Astronauts that spend months at a speed of 18000 mph come back 1-2 younger, not some guy who drove for a half hour. |

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 7:44:00 PM I CAN TRAVEL THROUGH TIME!i travel at the unamazing rate of 1 second per second yea... that video is BS. You need to travel much faster than that to notice the time difference. He would notice a time difference off by a factor of 1 / sqrt[1 - (his speed squared / speed of light squared ) ] |

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 6:11:35 PM ^^^actually you won't^^^ Time will remain the same for you, it will only be that you will live 5 seconds longer relative to everyone else "doing things". |

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 2:54:09 PM so what you're saying is if i stay home and not move i'll die 5 seconds later then if i did something with my life? AWESOME! |

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 2:48:59 PM Good point cantab, gravity has an effect also. In fact GPS satellites have to resynchronize their clocks now and then because time runs a tad bit slower up in space than it does on earth. |

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 2:42:56 PM Time dilation can't really make you younger, but rather slow down your rate of growth. Time itself doesn't really slow down but the relative movement of space does.So with an atomic clock, the interval between each millisecond becomes longer when the clock returns to a stationary state the interval comes back to normal so it seems time has slowed down. As many people have already said, time dilation isn't this exaggerated, you would have to reach speeds close to the speed of light to get that. |

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 2:05:34 PM :sigh: Fake. What on Earth drives people to post this sort of drivel. It just wastes other people's time (no pun intended). Time dilation can only be seen with highly accurate atomic clocks, and using planes, which travel about 10 times faster than cars. You actually then get effects from gravity (plane is higher) as well as velocity, which oppose each other; I can't remember which 'wins'. <aybe you could get solely the velocity effects with a high speed train. Alternatively, you can spot the effects solely due to gravity by having two clocks, one at low level while the other is at the top of a skyscraper (or better, mountain). You still need an atomic clock though. |

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 9:05:31 AM No it not fake. I remember in 5th grade and watching a Bill Nye on this. Thet had to guys the same age and he demonstareted that he put one on a rocket ship and sent him off for like 30 yrs and he grew gray. Then he came home and for the other guy it had only been a few years. |

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 3:09:58 AM DO NOT BELIEVE THIS!Time dilation is true and he would have changed the stopwatches, but the difference would have been far less than a millisecond and wouldn't be possible to calculate. 24 minutes at 54 miles an hour is stupidly slow and short amount of time. If this worked then all the super rich people would live in moving house travelling at 54 miles an hour because in a year you get 12 hours extra, in an average 75 year lifetime you would get 38 days extra. Also, sounding more sciencey, by following the paradox of the arrow and the runner it would be possible for you to live forever. You use up your 75 years and gain 38 days extra, then when you have used those up you'll get a little bit extra. Then when you've used that up you'll get a bit extra. And so on for all eternity. |

Monday, July 21, 2008 11:34:44 PM Time Dilation is real, though this video is an obvious fake. The space shuttle reaches speeds and travels much longer than the car in this video and the dialation there is so minute that they need to break it down using atomic clocks. The time dialation for the guy in his car would be so small the clocks probably wouldn't even show any change to the naked eye. |

Monday, July 21, 2008 10:40:11 PM Need to go a tad faster than 54mph..http://www.science.tv/watch/52b27eda3a12363109e8/Time-dilation-experiment Tryin a jet flying through the air for hours at a time to get a slight change in an atomic clock. That's the video that should be on the front page. |

Monday, July 21, 2008 10:07:03 PM I did this on a trip to Scotland once. Of course I was on a plane and traveled several thousand miles, and the result was only a few tenths of a second, but I know it works. |

Monday, July 21, 2008 8:37:40 PM Time Dilation is a true event, however, I highly doubt it would be so obvious at such slow velocities. . . From what I understands its only noticeable when traveling at speeds close to c. |

Monday, July 21, 2008 8:15:21 PM This might work for maybe 1/100th of a second or something, if you're travelling in a jet. |

Monday, July 21, 2008 7:51:34 PM No no no.. The idea of time dilation doesn't apply in any significant way until you get up near light speed. Well... Unless you're on mushrooms. You know, then there aren't really any laws of physics that apply. |
