Wednesday, July 16, 2008 7:10:42 AM I'm condensed energy. nice. I'd sign up to test what happens to a human who travels at light speed. I would probably die, BUT IN THE GLORIOUS NAME OF SCIENCE ! |

Tuesday, July 15, 2008 12:49:08 PM i think einstein was not only brilliant, but interesting also. i wrote a paper on the manhattan project, so i learned a lot about him and this particular theory. this vid was very interesting. its lovely to hear him speak. its like a little bit of history. i like the way he says vice versa. lol. |

Tuesday, July 15, 2008 6:45:06 AM As an actual physics geek there are much more intresting equations out there, people just like this one because it only has 3 letters. And although Einstein was a genius he's not in my top 5 physicists. |

Monday, July 14, 2008 11:13:48 PM Almightybob- WRONG, but close. Though energy is released, it is not based on the same principles explained here. When you burn the paper it turns it into energy AND other stuff (ashes, smoke etc). It is exothermic (gives off heat), and so can be changed back but getting the other parts (ashes, smoke etc) together and adding energy (endothermic). Einstein's theory is how mass COULD be changed into 100% energy, because they -are- each other.---FOR THE EMO KIDS/FUTURELESS IDIOTS--- E=MC^2 Energy=Mass times the speed light, times the speed of light. Which also means... M=E/C^2 mass= energy divided by the speed of light. so let's say mass=5.... 5=E/300,000,000 (the speed of light in km/s) 5(the mass we chose)=Energy/300,000,000 energy (E) would have to be 1,500,000,000. So, 5 mass equals 1,500,000,000 (I just finished jr high- I don't know the units for that, but look at tiredofnicks post- he has the details). |

Monday, July 14, 2008 9:29:15 PM Smart guys are so hot...But yes, I actually felt that I understood a very slight part of that. So it means that a small part on mass can mean a lot of energy? And a lot of energy, can mean a little mass? |

Monday, July 14, 2008 7:00:45 PM so that means the full energy potential can only be released by using antimatter, which is rare in the universe, in fact it would take more energy to produce antimatter than would be released in the subsequent reaction. |

Monday, July 14, 2008 6:59:03 PM Okay last edit. The equation accounts for all mass. So yes the energy potential for a piece of paper can be calculated by E=mc2. Remember that mass isn't necessarily related to weight (earth weight), as weight varies according to gravity. Something can be weightless and still have mass (as in it contains some ammount of matter, matter takes up space, and is also affected by different forms of energy and forces). Anyways the speed of light I imagine is used because it is a universal constant, light can slow down but that is its maximum speed, thus that speed represents the maximized potential of energy and so its used to calculate the energy of mass as both are interrelated, they are really representative of two versions of the same thing. Energy is equal to mass hence the equation. Adding energy has mass and mass has energy. Also this equation only represents the potential for energy (which also contains mass) |

Monday, July 14, 2008 5:53:53 PM ohhh dear lord that was SO goddamn wrong almightybob. Burning paper is a CHEMICAL reaction, the energy comes from the MOLECULAR reaction between the oxygen in the air and the processed wood that is paper. Nuclear energy is when ATOMS are split or fused. sigh. TiredofNicks is right all over the place. full points. |

Monday, July 14, 2008 5:24:12 PM Imagine burning a piece of paper. What you are doing is converting mass to energy. The amount of energy you get out (E) is the amount of mass you burn (M) times the speed of light (C) squared. There's not much mass in a piece of paper, but you get quite a bit of heat and light out of it, right? That's because the speed of light squared is a biig number (9x10^16 if anyone is interested). Now if anyone could figure out a way of getting the paper back from the heat and light, we'd be sorted for high-speed travel. |

Monday, July 14, 2008 4:17:49 PM Just to point this out, this formula has very little to do with traveling back in time. Just talks about the relationship of Mass to Energy and vice versa. |

Monday, July 14, 2008 4:08:51 PM iwcu pretty much got it.Nuclear power works on this principle, if you split an atom (fission) you end up with two nuclear cores whith a combined mass that's slightly lesser than the parent core, when you jam two cores together (fusion) you end up with one core with a mass slightly lesser than its parent cores. The mass difference is expelled as energy. A LOT of energy. E=mc2 means "The energy you get from totally converting a given mass is equal to that mass multiplied by the speed of light, squared. It literally means that. One kilogram of mass would translate into roughly 1*300,000,000*300,000,000=90,000,000,000,000,000 joules of energy. That's enough to keep a 60-watt lightbulb lit for forty-seven million years or keep a Hummer rolling for fifteen million miles. Yeah, I'm a nerd. Sue me. |

Monday, July 14, 2008 3:27:52 PM Hansbo, you're right. My bad! He just skipped classes, right?(Who was it that failed math? It was some genius somewhere that I read about, methinks... ><; Dammit.) Well, I learned to check myself. Thank you. Hahaha. |
