Hay all you morons internment camps were set up and used for German, and Italian Americans too. I guess history is too hard a subject for you idiots. Lets not for get that the Military took over Japan, with the Emperor as just a figure head, and refused to give up. Also if you dive deeper in the WW2 history would would find that the Japs were training Citizens to fight with spears and such. In effect making them in to conscript soldiers.

i do not believe that it should be considered a war crime, but i do not believe any normal person deserves to die like that, either. that is not fair. and don't say life isn't fair. it is. it is people who choose to be unfair.

Besides that more people died in the carpet-bomings of Tokyo or Dresden, but no one gets worked up about those cities. It seems to me that two nukes and 10 years of American occupation have done Japan some good. Germany too, for that matter.

Hmm...let's see I'm the new president because my much more popular predessor kicked the bucket. My generals tell me that invading Japan will costs thousands of American lives (Generals are always so pessimistic). But they tell me a couple egg-heads have just made a super-awesome bomb that can end the war in a matter of weeks. As a politician who actually wants a shot at being reelected by my people could I risk a conventional invansion when my opponent will tell the voters that no Americans had to die in that invasion and that I am either idioctic or weak for using not using this weapon. Hell no!

I believe that the bombings were perfectly justified. There were military targets all over both cities. Dresden was a completely differnt case. Dresden had no military significance. Would it have made you guys feel any better if we dropped 13 kt of conventional bombs on Hiroshima? An atomic bomb is just a big bomb after all. 13 kt of conventional explosives in one bomb would have had roughly the same effect.

catbarf

"In our legal system, if someone breaks the law by entering your home, you are not permitted to break the law and kill them. The actions of others do not excuse your own. "

Catbarf. I don't know where you live in the U.S., but here in the south, you are permitted to do just that if you think they are a threat.

I've see WW2 footage of people commiting ritualistic suicide and you've never brought any evidence of their so called surrender.

wrong, Japanese did surrender, see mainland events, see some islands. you shouldn't believe all the myths... Samurai lifestyle and "code" was already almost extinguished (at least they had tried to in late 19th century, Meiji period, and replaced it with a more western approach like duties of the nobility (derived from Germany and others)). What you call "Samurai code" is more a romaticised version of the middle/late 20th century.

And: if you fight as a modern, democratic nation defending its values, freedom and Bill of Rights you are measured by these standards. So - if they did it and if they have a different attitude towards life and death on the battle field and value that different, it's no excusation that we do the same. (at least not for the commanders, not talking so much about the regular soldier out there)

@2otto2
Soldiers started executing them because they knew that they were doing the same to us. If you had to fight through that you would've been pretty pissed at them too.

@stunami: "they had less than a 5% survival rate. Why? They would rather jump off cliffs than surrender."

Quite correct, but you're omitting some of the reasons for that (just adding here to complete the picture). The US troops during the Pacific War mostly didn't take take prisoners. There are thousands of documents proving evidence that after Japanese soldiers had surrendered they were shot by the US soldiers. The consequence was that Japanese propaganda took up on this fact and told not to surrender, because they would get shot anyway. So what's better? Dying while fighting desperately for your country or dying while surrendering to the enemy?

Referring to the original question: was it a war crime? Leaving out all the personal opinions if good or not, and following only the legally valid definition of war crime according to Hague and Geneva and later indictments, as accepted by the US governments: these bombs were war crimes.

pearl harbor: 2,388 killed and 1,178 wounded.
hiroshima & nagasaki: 140,000+ and 80,000+ respectively.

yeah, sounds like a totally fair counter-attack.

i love that the majority of the people replying are American, so excluding the fact that most of the replies are fueled by patriotism and bias.

hyrue - "do you know that just 3 years ago, a boy scout troop in Washington state found a bomb that the Japaneses used balloons to fly over the pacific and eventually to our soil. people have actually died, a decade after the war." -- this pales in comparison to the thousands of people who have died from radiation poisoning in japan, not to mention birth defects, etc.

The took on the Russians, the Koreans, the everyone else they ran up against and pissed on their graves.

Now how about a little kudos for the Americans for not raping and pillaging Japan, Germany and Italy like everyone else used to do pre-WWII? Where was our spoils of war? We did the right thing and rebuild their countries.

Now look at today's comparisons... We're rebuilding where we go (Iraq and Afghanistan). It took 11 years before we ended formal occupation of Japan, and when we were done they were on their way to being #2 besides us in the world! People back then said that Japan was a feudalistic society and could never be democratized.

I bet Cat and Apop are all against our efforts in Iraq too. Japan had rebellions too, and we squashed them. They were far more disciplined as a people than anyone else in the world, and it still took 11 years! Be a little patient with our current situation. We're doing the right thing, and it'll get better.

My major was Japanese, and I lived in Japan. In fact, I'm up so late because I have jetlag from returning from Japan. I've studied more than a little Japanese history, and my wife is Japanese.

They were indignant fighters till the end. If you look at what their civies did during the battles of Okinawa and Iwo and every other island fight, they had less than a 5% survival rate. Why? They would rather jump off cliffs than surrender.

This saved lives people, get it in your head. Also, stop playing monday morning friggin quarterback and hating the country that guarantees your freedom now, and look at what we were up against, and why. The Japanese back then thought of everyone else as subhuman. The ONLY reason they started to give Americans respect is because we were the ONLY country in their entire history to have defeated them.

The Chinese word for China means "center country". The Japanese had taken on and beaten the center of the whole wide world in their opinion...

just my 2 cents but i complete support the bombings and not for any higher concept of right or wrong. Simply for the fact that my grandmother a dutch citizen living in the dutch controlled indonesia was forced into one of the japanese concentration camps. she would have died if the war had ended weeks or months later. so while the entire war was filled with some of the worst that mankind has to offer, i would not be here to even contemplate whether it was a war crime or not. i understand i have a rare perspective and i am by no means trying to justify it but without it my grandmother would have died a horrible death in the camps (which the japanese government still denies existed). so there is my 2 cents

i've been trying so hard at my school to find a good example to show the rednecks how the bombings were a war crime. thank you Aodhan for helping me remember Barefoot Gen, it's been ages since i saw it.

if you look up lists of warcrimes throught the 20th century, all the crimes commited by other countries were harshly punished, but the ones perpetrated by the allies (American's more Specifically) are just passed of and someone is put in jail for a few years. the war crimes of other nations always end with executions and such.

Americans are just too much of babies to admit they did wrong and have no honor to step up and say , "yes we did wrong , now lets execute our leaders because they tarnished the image of our nation."

Kudos to japan for being so awesome now though, im there right now and everyone is fairly easygoing.(hey are still wary of foreigners though, and with good reason)
