Tuesday, June 24, 2008 11:05:44 AM I've always wondered... What happens if you leave your finger in it while it "turns to ice"? Does it get stuck? ahahha |

Thursday, June 19, 2008 12:53:58 AM Ok, to clarify the science questions...No, it's not ice. Ice is frozen water. This is frozen sodium acetate and water. A solid, to be sure, but not ice, as we know ice to be. Yes, exothermic. Meaning, gives off heat. Meaning if you touch it, it will be warm. It won't cool anything off. It requires a heat source of some sort to set off the reaction. It is unstable, but still stable enough to hold it's own. It needs something to set off the reaction, like 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, for instance. |

Wednesday, June 18, 2008 3:44:58 PM "What happens when you splash it onto the face of someone you don't like?" - Sodium acetate may cause irritation of the skin, eyes and respiratory tract but it's not that dangerous. Have a look at the MSDS (material safety data sheet) if you wanna know more. (google "sodium acetate MSDS")"how much of the chemical do you use" Keep adding sodium acetate (while stirring) until it doesn't dissolve anymore. At 20°C (room temperature, about 70F I think) you can dissolve 46.5 g in 100 ml of water, so it would be more than that when the water is boiling. "The ice is actually warm, or do they mean something else?" It's not really ice but it is warm, it's an exothermic reaction. |

Wednesday, June 18, 2008 3:22:05 PM ^^^ Not the same as supercooling but sort of similar. Supercooling: Liquid water below its freezing point. Supersaturation (as seen in the video): More salt in the solution than you could normally dissolve at a certain temperature. Now the similar thing: Once you have a crystallization seed (like the excess salt in the video) the whole thing crystallizes quite quickly. Why do you use all CAPS? |
