Wednesday, June 04, 2008 9:03:25 PM Rapid sublimation is fun. =] CO2(s) is so cold, if you drop a good chunk of it in boiling water, little pieces of water ice form near the dry ice after a few minutes, and the water is cold to the touch, even when left on a hot plate. Oh, and a _lot_ of CO2(g) is formed. Thus increasing the partial pressure of CO2 in the bottle, causing it to explode. And yes, it is technically an explosion, since there is a sudden outward force in all directions. Now, that cinder block had 2 holes, but they only used one water bottle... >=D -Stand Back! I'm going to try SCIENCE!- Reminds me of xkcd. 9.9 |

Wednesday, June 04, 2008 2:36:39 AM If you ever get your hands on some dry ice, try pressing a coin against it and listen to it scream. Don't do it for too long or you'll get a nice, inverted-coin burn scar on your fingers. |

Tuesday, June 03, 2008 3:39:32 PM Just ask your local ice cream man for a chunk of dry ice. Make sure and purchase a snow cone from him first. Not that you'd need a snow cone to make a dry ice bomb, they're just tasty. Add dry ice and a little H2O to 2 liter bottle, seal, run. Throw away snow cone cup in a trash can. Nobody likes a litter bug. Don't blow off your fingers, this stuff expands quickly. Careful not to eat snow cone too fast to not get brain freeze. 'Course if you're playing with dry ice, you probably don't have a brain, so go ahead and let Darwin take over, ya big dummy. |

Tuesday, June 03, 2008 1:39:57 PM "Erm I'm a second year chemist at uni... that makes very little sense if it's just a bottle of dry ice and a cinder block. The only way you can get explosions with dry ice is to convert it quickly back to gas and increase the volume (PV=nRT).."Stay in school. It doesn't need to be a quick conversion, it can take a week to build up the pressure it needs, 100+ psi is still 100+ psi whether it takes a week or a minute to generate. |

Tuesday, June 03, 2008 1:39:56 PM At first I thought that the cinder block had been completely incinerated, so the awesome factor of this was relatively brought down when I saw that the cinder block had merely been blown in half. Still awesome though. |

Tuesday, June 03, 2008 1:38:11 PM Mythbusters tested 2 litre bottles and found that they blow up at 105 psi. That's quite a bit, three times more pressure than automobile tires use.You can get EXTREMELY COLD dry ice (solid carbon dioxide (yes, the gas that is frozen enough to burn)) at a large supermarket or usually, Baskin Robbins or similar ice cream shop. But really, you should google "dry ice bomb" (that explodes) and watch some of those videos before you lose your fingers. |

Tuesday, June 03, 2008 1:28:15 PM Oh I see him putting the lid on the bottle this time... boring... try doing some fun things with pentafluro anitmony and hydrofloric acid, mix 'em and get almost 100% dissociated hydrogen ions that can dissolve through glass :P super acids are fun |

Tuesday, June 03, 2008 1:26:57 PM Lots of places sell dry ice. Man you do really do some damage with that and leave no evidence. |

Tuesday, June 03, 2008 1:25:46 PM Erm I'm a second year chemist at uni... that makes very little sense if it's just a bottle of dry ice and a cinder block. The only way you can get explosions with dry ice is to convert it quickly back to gas and increase the volume (PV=nRT).. And as dry ice is not particually cold cinder blocks should explode in particually cold conditions. |
