Wednesday, May 21, 2008 8:01:22 PM frankpoole: the way i heard it was that maybe she was thinking what you said then read the teleprompter and noticed her mistake and corrected herself, thereby giving a purpose to the moment of silence between the words as i have previously noted in my comment above... |

Wednesday, May 21, 2008 6:47:10 AM Good job they had the "expert" to point out that 45 seconds may be the limit. After seeing it fly for 45 seconds, anybody that isn't an expert would have said that the limit is less ¬¬ |

Wednesday, May 21, 2008 1:25:43 AM Those 'smart' reporters.... She says it only landed when it's tail hit the water and slowed it down, but if yoou've ever seen flying fish (Or just look at the video) you'l see it uses it's tail in the water to pick up more speed when it slows down, etc... Where's he going? He's probably going AWAY from something bigger and hungrier than him, LOL! They are cool to see flying in front of your boat though. Just sucks when they disappear below the bow and you hear a thump... |

Tuesday, May 20, 2008 9:35:09 PM puddies:i) Evolution isn't only about helpful abilities. Species can still survive as long as a trait isn't too much of a hindrance. This one doesn't seem to be a hindrance at all, so it wouldn't cause the species to die out. ii) Maybe it helps them catch flying insects near to the surface, i.e. a food source other fish can't effectively use. iii) Maybe it confuses predators chasing them. Wholly aquatic predators would track prey in water and might not be able to deal with that prey leaving the water. |

Tuesday, May 20, 2008 9:20:47 PM Harrydick - it's a flying fish. Strictly speaking, they glide, but they are known as flying fish. Other fish can "fly" a bit, by swimming hard towards the surface, more like jumping than flying, but flying fish have an unusual sort of wing/fin arrangement that enables them to extend the jump a bit, depending on conditions. Not usually as much as this one, though. |

Tuesday, May 20, 2008 9:14:51 PM x13purplesta: "Reverting to the stone age would kill most humans??? We wouldn't have to get the plagues back, just the simplicity. You think to much Angilion."That's better than not enough. There's no way the Earth can support close to 7 billion people with stone age technology. Stone age wouldn't include any farming, so hunting and gathering would be the ways to obtain food. That requires quite a bit of land per person and makes a lot more land uninhabitable. I was being generous in estimating only 80% of humanity would have to die. That many corpses, plus the total breakdown of all support services, would spread the usual diseases - typhoid, cholera, dysentry, etc. We'd then have some new ones - HIV, MRSA, drug-resistant TB, etc. Yersinia Pestis would spread, though probably not this far amongst the few remaining people, who would be unable to travel further than they could walk. We would have to have the plagues, because we couldn't stop them. |
