Sunday, April 20, 2008 11:35:59 PM Darkness: It depends. In the case of the power industry, they use 140 billion gallons annually. Of that, 135 billion gallons goes back to reservoirs and is "reusable". The rest (5 billion gallons) is what the calculated waste is. I.e. Freshwater no longer easily accessible. Option 1) Byproducts. Say something has H2SO4 as a byproduct. That water is no longer drinkable. It is now Sulfuric Acid. (Sulfuric Acid is actually usually a "product" not "byproduct" but I can't think of a "useless" substance at the minute). Option 2) Products. We use the water in making something. It could be something drinkable (any soft drink), or it could be just anything liquid (sulfuric acid). Option 3) Goes somewhere it's not easily gotten back. (Either via dumping, pumping or evaporation) (I.e. The sea. Dumping grounds. Contaminated areas.) Other options: I'm sure there's more I've missed. |

Sunday, April 20, 2008 1:07:44 PM Oh and the reason he says you used 5 litres or whatever it is to make a bottle of water:Cleaning, Processing, Plastics, Cooling, etc all use water. He's not saying 80% of the water is discarded. It's used in mking the bottle and trasporting it to you, and keeping it cool. Better example: Human being. You are 90% water. You contain therefore say about 60 litres of water. Storing you, feeding you, watering you, bathing you, transporting you, etc, means you use about 378 litres. A day. (You use up 1.38 million litres of water by age 10. The water bottle looks like it's doing pretty good). |

Sunday, April 20, 2008 12:44:38 PM Was waiting for the "He made the segway what does he know" comments."However, Kamen was already a successful and wealthy inventor, after inventing the AutoSyringe, a new type of mobile dialysis system for medical applications, the first insulin pump, and an all-terrain electric wheelchair known as the iBOT" The dialysis in particular gave many people their lives back. Also "There is tons of water"/"you can't waste water" etc. Live off sea water for a week. Drink nothing else. It's not just pollutants and cack, it's alot of perfectly natural crap your body can't handle in seawater. The freshwater we use is going there. Not the wells. Yes, it is wasted. "It needs power, it has a blinking light!". My dad runs a distillery. He has a powerplant that could power Paris to give Dubai drinking water. That looks like it runs on a watch battery. Do the math. |

Sunday, April 20, 2008 11:41:41 AM I think the guy is stretching the truth a little bit. I highly doubt this machine could eradicate 50% of diseases. It's a great invention nonetheless, if it does work. |

Sunday, April 20, 2008 11:16:16 AM Meh. He calls it people dying from lack of access to water, I call it population control. Obviously, population overflow is the bigger problem than water shortage, it is causing it afterall. |

Sunday, April 20, 2008 11:09:51 AM This is such retarded crap. water can never be "wasted" unless its launched into space. Everything made out of water is eventually evaporated back into the atmosphere and rains down once again. Sure, theres less water now because the population is so high, people are mostly made out of water, when they die, the water gets returned, plain and simple. |

Sunday, April 20, 2008 10:08:51 AM oh come on - he claimed it take five litres to produce a 500ml bottle....where is all the rest of the water going? We wouldnt be able to swim in the ocean if 90% of it was pollutants, he also didnt say how it worked only that it doesnt work the saame way as ALL other purification systems, if what MadP said is true the energy concern far outways the benefit of having pure water, All in all older systems still work out better i mean come on, this is a guy who thought the segway was a good idea |
