Tuesday, April 10, 2007 7:04:30 PM I got another way to do it. Take ammonium nitrate and nitromethane and mix them together, then put about 3 fluid ounces of it into a pan, and put the pan into a bunsen burner. |

Saturday, February 24, 2007 1:11:03 AM better to use red devil lye for the sodium hydroxide... less other crap in it and still available at most supermarkets |

Monday, February 19, 2007 1:09:10 AM also, iJasc is right. drano is very dangerous when you try to mess with it. It doesn't just have sodium hydroxide in it. I think there is Chlorine in solution too, along with other nasty stuff. I've seen what happens when you try to titrate Drano--bad idea. |

Monday, February 19, 2007 1:07:04 AM I've done this before. The silver pennies are just pennies with a super-thin layer of zinc deposited on them from the zinc-sodium hydroxide solution. The gold happens when you heat the penny and the copper creates an alloy with the zinc(brass) and looks golden. Remember that the layer of brass is very thin and relatively delicate. If you leave them with a layer of zinc it is even more so. Try using a clear nail polish or something to coat the outside when you're done to preserve the finish. |

Sunday, February 18, 2007 2:49:59 PM I'd like to try that actually - but i'm not going to run out to get those chemicals just to turn a penny gold. Plus they're pretty useless once you've done that. |
