also, just because the largest wood size you know of is a 4x4, does not mean they cant make it thicker.

The largest wood size that I know of is a tree. As usual, you're making stuff up and claiming your fiction is about me. It's not. It's yours.

You really ought to learn more about a subject before berating other people about it. All-wood ships leak. The bigger they are, the more they leak.

If you were talking about a raft made from particularly large trees, that might be a different matter. But you're not.

And yes, you can make a boat out of cement. Which is irrelevant to the fact that wooden boats are made of numerous pieces and that wood flexes, so even if you use pitch or some other waterproofing substance in the gaps there are limits to how big you can make it and keep it seaworthy.

Angi, Angi, Angi.... your lack of knowledge is showing.

You're citing the History Channel as a source of truth. Are you serious?

Out of interest, are you claiming that those ships were the results of magic or of alien technology that might as well be magic? It has to be one or the other.

5cats: "Wasn't the Santa Maria the smallest of the three?"

No, The Santa Maria was the largest.

And there is no proof, other than that one text, that the boat actually existed.

@angillon -
wow, the stupid keeps on coming. the size is nothing. its all about the surface area that touches the water. did you know they can make cement boats that float? there are competitions every year.
also, just because the largest wood size you know of is a 4x4, does not mean they cant make it thicker. shipbuilders spend decades honing their craft. they also use resin to make sure the boat is completely waterproof.
i would love to have the chance to travel on something this size. its like a cruse ship and a pirate ship made a baby, then went out for chinese. just imagine this thing trying to take over your harbor, scary stuff.

I wouldn't care to be on a wooden boat 420 feet long and 170 feet wide because I'm pretty sure that's not seaworthy. Wood flexes and comes in relatively narrow pieces, so there are very many joints in a large wooden boat. It leaks. The bigger it is, the more it leaks.

Wasn't the Santa Maria the smallest of the three? But the most sea-worthy.

Didn't Zheng have 5 of those monsters? Oh, wiki says 60+ lolz!

Except Zheng was an eunuch.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zheng_He

This has a decent, if short, biography about him.

The ships China made during that time were also generally larger than their European counterparts, not to mention that Columbus did not really get given anything overly special for his voyages ,more just what his investors had available.
