"Whale oil beef hooked."
Took me a second, then I laughed out loud, right in the middle of the office. Great! And I too said "crisp" out loud.

English speakers (and most Western speakers) are so primed to think in terms of alpha-phonetic literacy that it strikes us as odd that two distinct spoken languages can so closely share a written language (with comparatively few differences).

Not to be argumentative Drac, but I got my mate, Chen Ren in Beijing to cast his eye over the post. He says Mandarin is considered the official language of mainland China. He says all the dialects of Mandarin are similar and interreadable. But Catonese (and pekinese, he's said your humour is racist, but did laugh) and Mandarin are too dissimilar for one to be a dialect of another.

The Swiss are the proof that a direct democracy as well as gun control works IN combination with being most gun per capita country in the world.

How, you may ask? Well, having gun education and compulsory military education as well as strict gun handling laws doesn't make your country week and submitted to "an oppressive president" but makes you safe, takes the guns from the streets and makes you so confident in your peoples gun skills that you can say things like "shoot twice and go home" VV

The Swiss are confident. Asked what they'd do if an army twice their size attacked, they said they shoot twice and go home.

They are dialects. Cantonese people speak Cantonese and write in what is effectively the same as Mandarin grammar and characters (as opposed to Cantonese). For example, bird is "jerk" in Cantonese and "liu" in written Cantonese and spoken Mandarin.

Pekinese, however go "woof" and can't write.

@bliznik. Actually the Chinese consider it a language. Mandarin and Cantonese being the two main Chinese languages, and a Cantonese speaker has trouble understanding a Mandarin speaker and vice versa. So they consider it a language with many regional dialects. Over 700 last time I was there.
Not a critisism, just a point.

"The only time the word "incorrectly" isn't spelled incorrectly, is when it's spelled incorrectly."

Mind blown.

You can't "write" things in Mandarin. That's like writing things in a southern dialect or in an Irish dialect.

You can't write in an Irish dialect?

Cork screws were originally used to remove bullets lodged in gun muzzles, thus explaining their inclusion in Swiss army knives.

These are really good, but it's the one about "times on the clock that you may never have seen" that will keep you thinking. Maybe even drive you a little nuts. 5:31? 11:58? 3:44? Yeah, everybody's seen those .... right?
