"You're all a bunch of unimaginative Luddites."
Nobody said not to do it.
It's a pie-sky, logistically unstable idea until someone presents a reason to fund it beside "it would be cool."

Just thinking, it occurs to me it would be good to have a couple over the Pacifics and Atlantics as it would give compatible distress call mechanisms unlimited range.
If the bandwidth and IP addresses weren't each consumed, that is...

CynicalGamer and CodeJockey, I think the fact that the rocket looking like a wiener IS the incentive to maintain this.

Just think, world's greatest dick joke. Right there for all to see!

"Our computers aren't equipped with long-range beaming modems "
Not really the problem.

Apart from half-a-continent being able to tell what porn you watch, they want to:
-spend $100K per unit
-to place an array of 4 cubic inch, 3 lb cubes with multiple transceivers
-in LEO, (hopefully) geosync'd
With no subscriber basis.

Can they correct for drift?
How long will a unit function in Earth's shadow at full capacity?
Who will repair/replace the cubes?
What is their incentive to maintain the network?

@Denogginizer: agreed. Except the purpose of this is supposedly to span the gap of so many people not currently having access to the web. As you say, there's a lot more equipment (and costs) required to actually do that interactively as is implied in the graphic.

If you try to use it for online FPS games, the speed-of-light delay will get you killed real fast.

@smagboy1: unless they use a relay system, where your computer talks to a land based machine that beams it into space for Skynet to process.
When did access to the internet become an inalienable human right?

Okay, so, I can dig that. Let's say, for example, it's a wide sampling of current new sites, entertainment sites, etc. Fine. But the implied part about it being interactive (e.g. no censorship, sharing opinions, etc.) won't happen with this. This is one-way communication. Our computers aren't equipped with long-range beaming modems to send signals back to the interwebz. So this is a receive-only project. Still very cool, but not quite what's being implied in the graphic I don't think?

I like the idea of a single private company controlling news, information, education, and entertainment for the entire world. Think of it, a single global culture under the guiding hand of a benevolent organization with no ulterior agenda.
