Saturday, May 07, 2005 12:46:38 AM "Here's another lie that your teachers told you: The Civil War was about freeing the slaves and making black people equal with white people. The truth is that Lincoln wanted to maintain power over the Southern states. He didn't give a tinker's damn about slavery, he just wanted to keep the tax money rolling in, as well as the warm-water ports for his industrialist cronies."Although it's true that Lincoln didn't really care much about freeing the slaves, turning the Civil War into a battle over slavery helped keep the British from supporting the Confederacy. But I haven't heard most of these "lies" before, maybe cause I'm taking an AP class? |

Monday, April 18, 2005 8:15:22 PM The civilizations were incredibly advanced but it put the conqerors in better light back in Spain if they were said to be conquering "barbaric" "heathens". Thats all that mattered to them : Gold, Glory, and God. At points they even spread rumors that the people were cannibals. |

Monday, April 18, 2005 8:11:07 PM The land owners would then /literally/ work the people to death which caused need for more wokers which would be taken from nearby islands; somtime even making the island uninhabited(which in turn led to a need for /more/ workers causing the Middle Passage) |

Monday, April 18, 2005 8:07:25 PM The reason that there are fewer people now than when Columbus "discovered" it is because when the conquistadors arrived some of the new things they brought with them were: smallpox, measels, and typhus. Having absolutely no resistance to these the population plummeted. When the Spanish arrived central America had a population of about 25 million, in twenty years there were about 8 million. There is also the matter that when conquering they had far advanced weapons(Armour, gunpowder, horses) and allies (the Aztecs and Incas had alot of really angry tributary states due to high taxes and where else would they get their human sacrifices)and b/c they felt that "god" was on their side didn't feel bad about routing unarmed citizens. Finally there is the matter that after Spain finshed conquering they started "encomienda" where somone would be given a plot of land and all the natives that lived on it. |

Monday, April 18, 2005 2:37:15 PM Hard to believe huh depawel ? Look at the modern "infrastructure" on haiti today.Hardly any better then what the estimated 8 million had as a civilization. The point is,it worked,an there were a crap load more people there then when that butcher found it.I have lost all respect for columbus. |

Monday, April 18, 2005 2:29:25 PM 8 millian Haitians before Columbus? What BS; there's not that many people in Haiti today. How could that island have supported that many without a modern infrastructure? |

Monday, April 18, 2005 10:50:08 AM That's VERY accurate, it wasn't Columbus that discovered that the world was round, Fernão de Magalhães made a voyage around the world much before Columbus, he raised anchor in Portugal, Made it through the gap between South America and the South Pole, crossed the Pacific and ended up in Africa. |
