Recently we had a post about the charitable donations of one William Gates Esq.
I'd like to propose that his next generous donation to world society is a brand-new operation system that is not a re-hash.

Something has just clicked:
Where does the expression 'Meh' come from?
Probably from 'ME'

@WhoSaidWhat :
"Zed68, you almost got it right. To be Windows ME, that pile of rubble would have to be on fire!"
Not quite sure... the "fire" application would refuse to start in the first place.

DOS is the last good OS Microshaft made.

DOS 3.3, to be precise. I'd still be using Win 2K if it supported big hard drives.

Onoff, you do realize that XP is the little brother of 2000, right? They were both built off of the Windows NT platform, with 2000 being designed primarily for business use, then XP coming along shortly afterward, and being geared more toward home and private use, but still extremely useful in a business environment.

Vista was, as mentioned, a train wreck. 7 is nothing more than Vista, with all the patches already in place, and a fresh coat of paint. Basically, its like painting a dog turd gold. It looks shiny and new, but its still just a turd underneath. 8 is just more of the same. Same OS, just with all the stupid crap added to make it more "touch screen friendly".

Zed68, you almost got it right. To be Windows ME, that pile of rubble would have to be on fire!

Lastly, Microsoft hasn't made a new OS since Windows 1.0. 8 still has the same kernel, with a bunch of junk added to it. DOS is the last good OS Microshaft made.

Yeah, I've switched to 7 recently, my wife to 8. 7 is awesome (so I'm a little offended at the ugly-ass, horrible modern home that's shown... but in the humor it's necessary). 8 is essentially the same AFTER you learn where to always find the button to go to the "desktop." Once I found that, I could ignore all the dumbassery of "apps" based interface, and it wasn't so annoying. I think the picture for 8 is right on. It's like 7, just a bit more annoying.

yeah what is with the somewhat nice building for windows 8??? we all know it sux donky pud! Just reuse the vista upside down building for windows 8, but light it on fire too.

No, not at all.

Vista was basically wrong. Worse than the upside-down house in the photo (which was made to look that way) but the picture makes the point. Vista was fundamentally defective in terms of functionality.

8 works properly. It sucks hairy donkey balls not because it's a defective OS but because it has a defective interface. Useless, but for a different reason. It's an OS for devices with small touchscreens that's been spewed onto PCs. A very badly done bad port, essentially. It would be fine if it had a desktop interface. So the ugly, chaotic, mismatched building of splodgy messes (which is structurally sound underneath) is appropriate.

NT, W2K, XP. Solid, reliable. The only MS OS's that did the job.
Sadly support disappears soon for XP, that I still run on all my machines.
I don't know what to get next, everyone says the new ones are all crap.

7.

I used XP for years. I was used to it, I'd set it up exactly as I wanted it and it worked extremely well, so why change? A few reasons - memory (I had 32-bit XP, so it could only address about 3.5G), newer DirectX versions and, most importantly, the ending of support.

I dismissed 8 because I'm using a proper PC, not a handheld with a touchscreen. Which left 7. So I bought it. It took me a couple of days to get used to the changes from XP, mainly in the interface windows explorer. It's an almost seamless change from a user's point of view. It's certainly not crap. 8 is, but 7 isn't.

"I didn't think vista was that bad"

OMG, I must have spend 80 hours of my time TRYING to get vista to work. No drivers available, kept crashing, nothing would work with it. Thank god they released windows 7 before I slit my wrists.

2k was my favorite for the longest time. I didn't want to switch to XP but finally did. Now, I agree with SmagBoy1 ... Win 7 seems to be the best of them all.
