Yeah, AOL has done some pretty dumb things in its time, but buying HuffPo might be the dumbest. The former might survive, but I cannot see them subsidising HuffPo indefinitely, it makes no commercial sense.

5Cats is spot on. There are far more of these. There is even an aircraft carrier named after Foch, whose predictions would mean that such a thing would not exist.

It's a lot easier to predict things wrongly than rightly...

I was out in the boonies for the eighties and when I got back to UK I thought buying bottles of water was a wierd aberration that wouldn't last.

I thought mp3 players were lame and wouldn't catch on because you HAVE to have a computer to load songs.

The last one is actually correct. HuffPo has yet to turn a profit. It's apparently being propped up by donations -- probably from some rich liberal like George SoreAss.

Kree - Ruth was doing a little pitching in '18 and '19, but had started playing in the outfield in '17. He only pitched in 17 games in the early part of the '19 season, then he went to the outfield full time to focus on hitting. If he had played the whole season out there, he would have probably hit more than 29 that year. The next two years he almost doubled it, hitting 54 and 59.

CodeJockey - I was referring to the players and the ginormous discs, not the technology. I was also being sarcastic.

Freddy, I thought he broke the home run record by hitting 29 as a pitcher, and then they moved him over.

The babe ruth one confuses me. What does his hitting record have to do with the position he played? Pitchers hit just like everyone else.

Not true. Pitchers have horrible batting averages compared to other players, and few home runs. If he had remained a pitcher he most likely would never have set the hitting records that he did.

Oh and I just knew that laser discs would never take off.

wait.....

Angilion, they got the date wrong. He made the comment in 1896.

Right, I've found it now.

He rescinded the comment shortly afterwards, having seen the evidence. So it's not much of a story, really. X-rays were a rather radical thing at the time, so it's not surprising that people were sceptical about them.

Lord Kelvin said that the X-rays WILL prove to be a failure, so maybe he was commenting on what scientists were attempting to do involving X-rays.

X-rays were discovered in the mid 1890s. Roentogen...something like that. So how could Lord Kelvin have been commenting on them 10 years earlier?
